Job Description:
The Data Analyst II (DA II) in the Injury Prevention Unit/Texas Overdose Data to Action (TODA) performs qualitative data abstraction and compilation related to Texas unintentional and undetermined overdose deaths. The DA II will be primarily responsible for identifying, analyzing and summarizing pertinent information from death certificates, justice of the peace/medical examiner records, and toxicology reports. This position will enter data into the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) through the CDC Secure Access Management System (SAMS). The DA II will request, track, and receive documents from new and existing data providers. The DA II cleans, scans, stores, and organizes documents pertaining to Texas unintentional and undetermined overdose deaths from data providers, which includes state and county agencies; medical examiners; and justices of the peace. This position will engage in data quality improvement projects such as re-abstracting cases and maintaining record management systems. Other related duties as assigned. The DA II works under the TODA Manager. Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

(50%) Compiles unintentional and undetermined overdose death data from multiple data sources (i.e. death certificates, medical examiner and justice of the peace reports, and toxicology reports). Analyzes and identifies pertinent information from source documents as defined by the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS). Translates pertinent information into SUDORS registry codes based on established CDC guidelines. Adheres to CDC guidelines, grant deadlines (bi-annually), and administrative and programmatic requirements.

(10%) Contacts justices of the peace and medical examiners to obtain data/verification information on cases in a timely fashion to meet grant requirements. Requests, tracks, and receives documents from new and existing data providers. The data abstractor cleans, scans, stores, and organizes documents pertaining to Texas unintentional overdose deaths from data providers, which include state and county agencies; medical examiners; and justices of the peace. Follows up with reporting sources as needed. Assists in improving data collection processes by identifying issues and assisting in mitigating them.

(20%) Engages in data quality improvement and security projects. Will provide re-abstraction and cross validation of cases as needed to ensure high quality abstraction. Cross trains and supports other abstractors on maintaining and implementing secure systems for digital and physical files throughout the abstraction process.

(15%) Assists epidemiologists in responding to data requests. Writes responses to correspondence and/or replies to telephone inquiries by providing required data, information, or assistance as required.

(5%) Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Knowledge Skills Abilities:
