The Pani Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia seeks applications for two Lab Research Technician 2 positions in the area of cell biology and regeneration. The Pani lab uses acoelomorph flatworms and C. elegans to investigate the cellular and mechanisms underlying development, homeostasis, and regeneration. The ideal candidates will be self-motivated, passionate about basic science, intellectually engaged in their research topics, and have prior experience with independent research project management as an undergraduate student or technician. A college degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Biology or a related field (by the position start date) is strongly preferred.

The ideal candidates will have experience with one or more of the following techniques:
marine invertebrate (preferably acoelomorph) husbandry C. elegans husbandry and genetics confocal or fluorescence microscopy classical developmental biology/embryology methods, and/or molecular biology techniques such as PCR and nucleic acid purification.

Applicants should ideally have demonstrated interest in developmental biology, regeneration, and/or evolutionary biology through undergraduate coursework or prior research experience. Relevant coursework or experience should be included in your resume. Applicants can be considered for either position but should indicate in the cover letter if they would be particularly qualified for one.

The Lab Technicians’ responsibilities will include:

Position 1:
Maintaining breeding acoelomorph (Hofstenia miamia) colony, including tank maintenance and feeding of adult and juvenile animals. Conducting molecular biology experiments on H. miamia development and regeneration using pharmacological inhibitors or protein treatments Conducting experiments that involve characterizing gene expression patterns using immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization Fulfilling other lab duties as needed

Position 2:
Providing molecular biology support for the lab using methods such as plasmid purification, nucleic acid isolation, and molecular cloning Contributing to care and maintenance of breeding H. miamia colony Conducting experiments on cell proliferation dynamics using DNA labeling reagents and immunofluorescence Maintaining lab inventories and other lab duties as needed. `

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and lab procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

These positions are located In Charlottesville, VA.

The anticipated start date is June 10, 2024. These positions are restricted positions and are dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. These are non-exempt level, benefited positions.

Experience:At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience.Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
