KHCC serves over 5,000 families annually with an inclusive environment for children with special needs, low-income families, recent immigrants, survivors of sexual and domestic abuse, and at-risk teens. KHCC helps participants overcome adversity and develop the skills they need to build bright futures.

KHCC’s College Directions Program aims to support youth through college and career exploration and planning as early as middle school. The program runs at the main site during the daily Teen Program schedule, and is now offered out of college and career readiness offices on the nearby JFK and Walton Educational Campuses. The College Directions Program Director supervises the counselors/coordinators, and leads the planning and implementation of our full slate post-secondary planning priorities with area youth, including goals for 1:1 advising, day trips/college tours, overnight college trips, college and career themed trips and events, and annual recognition ceremonies. The CDP Program Director also leads our offerings of summer training and work opportunities for high school youth such as Summer Bridge, CARA Summer Institute, SYEP work assignments.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of College Directions programming (CDP), including outreach and recruitment, intake and registration, yearly calendar and curriculum development (workshops, trips, special events), administrative tracking, fiscal transactions, and supervision of daily activities across center and school based locations.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies such as CARA, colleges, college counseling networks, and DOE or Charter schools that consistently provide support, collaborate around specialty projects, and/or send youth to use KHCC’s college access services.
  • Supervise College Directions full-time staff of counselors/coordinators at the mainsite and at our school partner Student Success Centers on the Walton and JFK campuses; Support coordinators in their supervision of part-time youth leaders and bridge coaches.
  • Lead the team in providing off-site training and college access workshops at new partner locations and schools
  • Coordinate in-kind and/or fee for service SAT preparation courses; Maintain collaboration with New York Cares as possible.
  • Conduct timely reporting to all government agencies and private foundations providing CDP grants; Support Development department in seeking out new funding sources, forging new partnerships, and writing new proposals.
  • Manage data collection and tracking systems across Teen Center as this relates to current private funders, and applications to new foundations.
  • Engage, build relationships with, and provide appropriate behavior management and supervision for youth via daily tween, teen, and CDP program activities.
  • Research, plan and implement college workshop curriculum alongside the college counselors/coordinators
  • Provide individual college counseling for caseloads of youth as needed to support counselors/coordinators at each site.
  • Stay informed about changes and developments in the college access community, including the statewide CUNY/SUNY system, FAFSA, scholarships and Pell/Tap grants, and special programs for low-income students (e.g. EOP, HEOP, SEEK, Dream Act, etc.)
  • Attend agency wide and outside meetings and training as needed (e.g. CACNY, DYCD, New York Cares, CARA, etc.)


Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; handle, or feel; talk, hear, smell or taste. On rare occasions it may be necessary to move quickly, run, etc. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
