Job Overview

Minimum: $15.45

Midpoint: $20.72

Duties and Responsibilities

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below.

Provides patron surveillance of swimming area and enforces park policies, procedures, and rules to ensure the safety and well-being of the park patrons. Responds to distressed swimmers and drowning victims in a timely manner. Provides first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to patrons during emergencies. Maintains the beach grounds by renovating beach sand, weed eating, and maintaining buoy lines and beach area. Performs maintenance such as painting, minor boardwalk repair, docks, fences, and other maintenance tasks. Cleans and resupplies restroom, shelters, and picks up ground trash. Performs other related duties as required.

Job Specifications

Working knowledge of applicable park regulations, ordinances, and swimming area rules. Working knowledge of American Red Cross lifeguard training methods and techniques. Skill in American Red Cross Lifeguard techniques. Skill in administering CPR and First Aid. Skill in preparing and completing reports. Ability to read and understand job related materials. Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to work effectively with others. Ability to work under stressful conditions. Ability to maintain a current American Red Cross Life guarding, CPR, and First Aid Certifications. Ability to use a computer and related software. Ability to swim. Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts to include weekends and holidays. Ability and willingness to work outside in a subtropical climate under adverse weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

Must be fit enough to get in and out of the water quickly. Must be able to swim for a certain distance in a certain time. Bending, reach, stoop, stand, sit and/or walk for extended periods.

Work Category

Heavy work - Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds or force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Graduation from High School or possession of a GED certificate; OR Must be 16 years of age and current High School student; AND Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification; AND Possession of a current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification; AND Possession of a current American Red Cross First Aid Certification; AND Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.

​​​​​​​ Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
