The assistant principal reports directly to the principal.

Assistant principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising the responsibility, assistant principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's strategic plan, policies and budget. Assistant principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in policy formulation and decision making.

The management of significant school program or functional areas in schools involve assistant principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.

Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources.

Responsibilities

Typically, assistant principals perform one or more of the following functions:

supervision and coordination of the work of senior curriculum or level coordinators; allocation of budgets, positions of responsibility and other resources within the area of responsibility; supervision of the delivery of teaching programs; management of programs to improve the knowledge and experience of staff; responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers and year level coordinators; contribute to the overall management of the school;

THS has four sub-schools:

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Thornbury High is seeking a strategic and suitably experienced leader to undertake the role of Assistant Principal: Operations & Senior School. Working closely with the Principal Team, the successful candidate will lead, develop and drive the execution of initiatives aligned with the values and goals of the school. Keys to success will include the documentation of programs, delegation as necessary, and clear and timely communication with staff, students, families and the wider community.

This AP role encompasses strategic direction and leadership, including the leadership and mentoring of existing staff with responsibilities in Operations and Senior School. The successful candidate will report directly to the Principal. The role will also include a teaching allotment in line with the successful applicant-s teaching methods.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES

The following list should not be seen as limiting and aims to provide an overview of the key areas of responsibility:

- Oversee the daily operations of the school, including Daily Organisation, calendars, Activities Committee (approving events and PD) and special program timetables.

- Lead the development of the school timetable (Edval) including mid-year rollover and changes to accommodate unplanned staffing changes.

- Take a proactive role in recruiting casual and contract staff, both ES and teaching.

- Complete staff inductions, including an up-to-date Staff Handbook.

- Advise the Principal on staffing requirements.

- Oversee the logistics of whole school events including Sports Carnival, Photo Day and Futures Expo.

- Work with the Head of Senior School to promote and uphold high expectations of our senior students, maximising their learning and wellbeing.

- Coordinate buses, transport and crossing supervisors.

- Coordinate the school-s marketing, including Open Night.

- Oversee Emergency Management.

- Perform the role of OHS Manager, including Asbestos Coordinator.

- Oversee and update policies as required by DE.

- Return to Work Coordinator (Workers Compensation)

- Lead by example around the school ensuring that the highest standards are achieved in all that we undertake.

- Any other duties as required by the Principal.

VIT LANTITE

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Our results in finding post-school pathways for senior students remain above the state median. The school continues to implement key teaching and learning strategies with a strong literacy and numeracy underpinning through our reinvigorated professional learning program.

Thornbury High-s many strengths include our instrumental music program that includes free instrumental music tuition to all year seven and eight students as part of the performing arts curriculum, the recently expanded Sports Academy program and our Italian language immersion program.

The school hasredeveloped its facilities recently completing stage two of our masterplan; a $ million STEAM Centre. Our stage one Performing Arts and Sports Centre completed in 2020 has added to the vibrant teaching and learning program in those areas.
