Payment Operations– Senior Consultant

Scope of role:

The role is required to work within the Payments Standards and Control Group (PSCG) within the Northern Trust (NT) Asset Servicing (Payment Operations) Business. The twin objectives of the PSCG are to ensure:

  • NT's payments are processed in a regulatory-compliant manner;
  • NT's payments are processed with the optimum level of operational efficiency.

Core responsibilities:

  • Regulatory Reporting – gathering source payments data and generating regular reporting for validation. Preparing regulatory reports for onward validation by regional risk teams.
  • Ongoing payments data quality checking, both in relation to regulatory compliant messages being sent and received, and in relation to operational efficiency rates: internal and external STP monitoring and corrective action where necessary.
  • Act as part of the PSCG investigations team in relation to dealing with matters of payments format, charges, and agent/market practice.
  • Performance of some senior roles within the team – for example and without limitation:
    • agreement of service descriptions with compliance stakeholders;
    • maintenance of procedure documents, including keeping them up to date and ensuring process changes are properly recorded;
    • maintenance of continuity plans and internal records and checklists;
    • working with audit services to test and improve our procedures and controls.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong payments knowledge & good understanding of NT's business & payment use-case scenarios.
  • Good understanding of international payment regulation and a forensic mindset to interpret payment regulation.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to adapt well to change – as our systems and processes evolve constantly, the candidate will need to work with capability to deliver change.
  • Clear written style to translate payment formatting issues into layman business language.
  • Good power point skills & ability to show complex payment trends in dashboard type materials.

Experience:

  • Requires a basic understanding of current and impending global payments standards and regulation.
  • Good understanding of how NT makes and receives its payments today – globally.
  • Proven experience of interfacing with multiple teams and communicating in a clear and succinct fashion, ideally within payments or cash operations.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems using negotiation, influencing and escalation methods.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Experience working on highly sensitive processes in a robust control environment with low tolerance for errors.
