About the Role

The Tooling Engineer is responsible for managing & coordinating new model launch tooling from concept through mass production of program life & service requirements. The Tool Engineer will support the production business units and provide subject matter expert skills for the betterment of safety, quality, and costing measurables. They will utilize existing guidelines and standards to develop specifications for the redesign, repair or replacement of production equipment and tooling. This position will coordinate activities focused on technical development, feasibility, scheduling, implementation, Engineering change management and resolving production non-conformances with the supply base. Committed involvement with continuous tool, die and mechanical improvements.

Your Responsibilities
  • Know and understand Bowling Green Metalforming Safety, Quality & Environmental policies.
  • Follows and supports Magna's operating principles
  • Utilize BGM standards for obtaining quotes for new & existing tooling with a defined Scope of Work.
  • Perform evaluation of tooling orders received.
  • Records tool requirement data on tooling order and places requisition of tooling order.
  • Develop timing plans for tooling including but not limited to new launch, modifications, improvements, tool resourcing strategies and engineering changes.
  • Develops concepts and provides feasibility feedback for World Class Manufacturing processes.
  • Manage tool modifications for engineering changes for internal or external vendors.
  • Manage non-conformances with the supply base utilizing problem solving methods. Collaborate with tier suppliers to proactively prevent recurring issues and document lessons learned.
  • Organize and maintain Tooling and Press CAD Data in a systemic method.
  • Contacts cross functional teams & tier suppliers to follow up on procurement or production activities and to expedite movement of tools between departments or vendors.
  • Must have the ability to determine tonnage requirements, proper shear clearances, and tolerances for die punching and trimming, proper forming clearances, specifies appropriate steel applications, as well as recommending coatings or other process improvements to the tooling.
  • Manage elements of the APQP criteria for tier supplier base & tool build sources during pre-production and mass production products.
  • Manage die moves in supply base (internal/ external) support resourcing strategies including participating or leading technical reviews.
  • Collaborate with Assembly Production teams on adjustments required in component parts to achieve more ideal assembly fit up, promote higher quality dimensional & weld health metrics.
  • Lead continuous improvement and cost reduction activities.
  • When pre-production & mass production changes occur, including but not limited to Engineering Changes, Refurbishment or scope change its necessary for the Tooling Engineer to provide technical justification & present to the customer.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Who we are looking for

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) or equivalent certification from a four-year college or technical school or ten years' experience in applicable role
  • Journeyman card in tool and die qualification preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of Automotive process and stamping tooling experience
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience consulting with outside vendors
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in a manufacturing environment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Computer skills; Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Project Planner)
  • Operational knowledge of ISO/TS16949 Core Tools
  • Operational knowledge of AIAG industry standards
  • Proficiency in Metallurgy of steel & applications
  • Ability to interpret simulation software's (AutoForm, Dynaform, PamStamp)
  • Proficiency in modeling software AutoCAD, CATIA, Teamcenter
  • Proficiency of GD&T & Blueprints
  • Operate standard office equipment.
