We seek an experienced and strategic-minded Director of Project Portfolio Management to lead our organization's portfolio of projects and initiatives. This key leadership role will be responsible for overseeing the strategic planning, governance, and execution of projects to ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, deep expertise in project management and portfolio optimization, and a track record of driving successful project outcomes.

The Director of Project Portfolio Management is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing the organization's project portfolio to ensure alignment with business objectives and optimal resource utilization. With a focus on strategic alignment, resource optimization, and effective governance, this position plays a pivotal role in driving successful project outcomes and maximizing business value. By leading a team, the Director fosters a collaborative and inclusive team culture focused on achieving portfolio objectives and delivering value to the organization. With a strong emphasis on communication, risk management, and continuous improvement, this role is essential for driving organizational success through effective portfolio management practices.

On-site and in-person work required at least 3 days per week , meeting with various stakeholders to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the project portfolio management program. Proactively identifies needs and facilitates 1:1 or group meetings with hospital personnel to problem-solve and prevent avoidable challenges. The on-site work expectation, for the Director of Project Portfolio Management, may change and falls under the decision authority of the Executive Director of Operations.

Strategic Portfolio Management:

Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for managing the organization's project portfolio in alignment with business objectives. Lead the identification, prioritization, and selection of projects that contribute to strategic goals and deliver maximum value.

Resource Optimization:

Allocate resources effectively across projects within the portfolio to optimize utilization and ensure alignment with strategic priorities. Monitor resource capacity and demand to address potential constraints and ensure efficient resource allocation.

Project Governance:

Establish and maintain project governance processes, standards, and methodologies to ensure consistent project execution and compliance with organizational policies. Define project management practices, tools, and templates to support project teams and ensure adherence to governance requirements.

Performance Monitoring and Reporting:

Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor the performance of projects within the portfolio. Develop systems and processes for tracking project progress, assessing risks, and identifying opportunities for improvement. Prepare regular reports and dashboards for stakeholders to communicate portfolio status, performance, and risks.

Risk Management:

Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with projects within the portfolio. Develop risk management strategies and contingency plans to address potential threats and minimize impact on project outcomes. Facilitate resolution of project issues and conflicts to ensure successful project delivery.

Stakeholder Communication and Engagement:

Communicate regularly with stakeholders at all levels of the organization to provide updates on portfolio status, progress, and performance. Facilitate decision-making and issue escalation as needed to ensure alignment with strategic objectives. Foster collaboration and engagement among project stakeholders to promote transparency and accountability.

Portfolio Optimization and Continuous Improvement:

Continuously evaluate the portfolio to identify opportunities for optimization, consolidation, or reprioritization based on changing business needs and resource constraints. Recommend adjustments to the portfolio to maximize business value and drive strategic outcomes. Implement lessons learned and best practices to drive continuous improvement in portfolio management processes and practices.

Team Leadership and Development:

Lead a team to ensure effective portfolio management and project execution. Provide coaching, guidance, and support to team members to foster professional development and growth. Create a collaborative and inclusive team culture focused on achieving portfolio objectives and delivering value to the organization.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:

  • Proven experience managing complex project portfolios in a dynamic business or healthcare environment.
  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Excellent analytical, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience with project portfolio management software tools and systems.
  • Leadership experience, including team management, coaching, and performance management. Bachelor's Degree (Required): A degree in a relevant field such as business administration, project management, information technology, engineering, or a related discipline.

    Project Management Certification (Project Management Institute) (Required)

    Master's Degree (Preferred): A master's degree in a relevant field such as Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA), Master of Science (MS) in Project Management, or a related discipline.

    Candidates will have at least 6-8 years of relevant business and management experience in project management, portfolio management, or a related field. This experience may include progressively increasing levels of responsibility, leadership roles, and demonstrated success in managing complex project portfolios and leading teams.

    Additional and Relevant Certifications: Additional certifications related to portfolio management, agile methodologies, risk management, or strategic planning are preferred, but not required. Examples include PMI Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP), Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), or Certified ScrumMaster (CSM).

    Continuing Education: Given the dynamic nature of project management and portfolio management practices, ongoing professional development and continuing education are essential and will be expected throughout the incumbent's tenure. Staying updated on industry trends, emerging methodologies, and best practices through workshops, seminars, conferences, and online courses have been proven to enhance knowledge and skills in portfolio management.
