Valparaiso University invites applications for the position of Clinical Assistant Professor of Social Work ). Valparaiso University ("Valpo"), a community of learning grounded in the Lutheran tradition of scholarship, freedom, and faith, prepares students to lead and serve both church and society. Located one-hour southeast of Chicago on a 310-acre campus, Valpo is a comprehensive university with an enrollment of over 3,800 undergraduate and graduate students. Valpo is consistently recognized as one of the best private universities in the Midwest and is located in Valparaiso Indiana, a county seat of roughly 35,000 residents with high quality schools and an active social community.

The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses in social work education, involving mostly a clinical focus and grounded within social work ethics and perspectives. This role has a 24-credit teaching load, plus additional program and campus citizenship activities. This is a non-tenure-track position. Programmatic and preparation elements will occur over the summer on a limited basis but there is no requirement of teaching classes over the summer. In 2023, the position would begin August 5, 2024 for onboarding related to program training and transition.

Candidates must have an MSW in Social Work and 2 years post MSW experience. A preferred candidate will have clinical experience. The most important qualifications will be someone with

a) a firm understanding of the NASW Code of Ethics and how values and standards play out in direct practice with client systems, including how to work through ethical dilemmas

b) an understanding of BSW social work programs at small universities,

c) an ability to be a quick learner and contributor at regular program meetings/events,

d) a public speaking presence,

e) an attention to detail and organization,

f) technology experience including Blackboard,

g) a commitment to be readily present at student-related events and trips on and off campus,

h) experience with micro/clinical social work, generalist practice, accreditation, and supervision.

i) a social work license

Additional preferred characteristics include

  • teaching or workshop experience the ability to model and describe a variety of verbal and nonverbal micro-skills of communication a firm understanding of Systems Theory, multicultural awareness, and the Strengths Perspective, and how to utilize them in practice the ability to guide students through conducting a thorough assessment, including the creation of a Bio/Psycho/Social/Spiritual assessment an ability to articulate the benefits of practice with individuals, couples, families, and groups, and under what circumstances each level of practice is appropriate or not appropriate an ability to describe structured goal-setting and decision-making models and how to work through each stage with various client systems firm understanding of human developmental stages and challenges across the lifespan an awareness of current developments and research in the following areas: neurodivergence, trauma-informed care, identities within the LGBTQ+ community, and respectful terminology familiarity with community agencies and organizations in Northwest Indiana an ability to articulate the differences and similarities between social work and other professions that serve or seek to understand people (psychology, psychiatry, sociology, etc.) knowledgeable about different social work licenses and what is required to obtain them
