The Product team is looking for an accomplished, customer obsessed, and results oriented Director, Design

This position is a hybrid role and it is required to be on-site 2-3 days each week at one of the following locations: Chevy Chase, MD, Fredericksburg, VA, Macon, GA or Indianapolis, IN.


POSITION OBJECTIVE:
This role will be leading our diverse and highly skilled team of problem solvers who routinely employ design and systems thinking to conceptualize and develop high-impact customer experiences. With a proven track record of solving complex design problems in collaboration with product and engineering, the ideal leader is relentlessly focused on the human at the center of every challenge.

The ideal candidate will be a great listener and a crisp communicator, with strong business judgment and analytical skills, will also have the ability to thrive within ambiguity, assess and synthesize complexity, and still find the north star that brings clarity and drives forward momentum. The selected candidate will lead the design team to employ design and systems thinking to conceptualize and develop high-impact customer experiences, solves complex design problems in collaboration with product and engineering.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads design initiatives at the value stream level. Identifies opportunities to leverage experience design to deliver business value.
  • Owns design initiatives at the value stream level from conception to delivery.
  • Influences and builds consensus among senior leadership through principled design storytelling.
  • Delivers design critique across multiple teams.
  • Develops design direction and plans design activities against a rigorous, thoughtful, and contextual implementation of the design process.
  • Collaborates with Product, Data, and Engineering leadership ensuring integrated solutions.
  • Creates partnerships across design principles and value streams to avoid duplication and integrate experiences for customers.
  • Reframes problems to help partners gain new insight. Builds support for new ideas that impact the business.
  • Solves challenges at the value stream level.
  • Leads, manages & builds design team careers through mentoring and training.
  • Prepares and manages department business plans, staffing projections and budgets.

CANDIDATE BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and have strong organization/priority setting skills
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Must have the following education and experience:
    • 12+ years of experience in UX/UI design, product design, or experience design
    • 5+ years of experience building, growing & managing teams
    • Bachelor's degree in Human Factors, Instructional Design, Computer Science, Digital Media, Interactive Media, Web Design, Communication, Behavioral Science, or equivalent experience
    • Experience navigating a complex and highly regulated ecosystem
    • Prior experience designing customer experiences and platform experiences across device types and viewports, including web and native mobile (iOS & Android) experiences
    • A track record of envisioning, designing, and delivering successful customer experiences
    • Prior experience in designing and/or evolving design systems
