The DDCS Innovation function plays a vital role in Lilly's mission to bring pioneering technology for the delivery of healthcare by investigating novel technologies both internally and through external collaborations that can assist in fulfilling this mission. The Innovation team will consist of core technology-focused science and engineering fields along with key external innovation subject matter authorities. Together this group will own new investments in delivery and device technologies that span all therapeutic areas.

As drug therapies become more sophisticated, Lilly has expanded our product capabilities to include the design and development of consumer-friendly, innovative, and award-winning drug delivery systems. Driven by the broader, consumer-focused digital revolution in healthcare, Lilly is further expanding the definition of product to include design, build, integration and orchestration of digitally enabled health care interactions. Specifically, we are interested in (1) Hardware and digital solutions that can be incorporated into our products; (2) Tools for engaging consumer and HCP customers; (3) Digital tools for working with payer customers; and (4) population management tools. Coupling our medicines, devices, delivery systems, and digital solutions with consumer health solutions and health systems, we believe we can partner with providers and payers to enable significant improvements in healthy outcomes for our customers.

We are seeking an Executive/Senior Director- DDCS Drug Delivery and New Product Innovation to partner with R&D leaders across LRL Therapeutic Areas, the Medicines Innovation Hub and the Business Units, as well as leaders in Regulatory and Manufacturing to define and deliver our strategy. This individual will be responsible for developing internal drug delivery and device platforms as well as coordinating with external technology providers in drug delivery and device initiatives focusing on innovative delivery solutions, novel device designs , and delivery modalities, that have the ability to address critical unmet patient needs. This individual must have a broad understanding of our clinical, discovery and technology portfolios in order to be able to identify and prioritize high-value internal/external opportunities. You will be a champion of new technologies and approaches, even when they seem up-and-coming, to help drive the organization to consider non-traditional technologies as the external healthcare environment is changing at an ever-increasing rate. You should demonstrate a clear understanding of the drug development process, familiarity with regulatory environments, pharmaceutical standards of care in the target markets, critical relationships, and emerging technologies to provide Lilly with competitive access to possible opportunities of strategic interest.
Key Objectives/Deliverables:

Play a central role in defining and driving the internal/external innovation strategy by identifying probable areas of technical disruption as well as key gaps within Lilly's portfolio requiring external collaboration activities. Prepare technology portfolio with drug delivery solutions that can address delivery of new modalities, peptide therapeutics, biologics, and small molecules including ability for line extension and life cycle management. Establish a strong familiarity, presence, and influence with the evolving external environment. Become proficient at not only harnessing external innovation, but in driving it for the benefit of Lilly and patients. Gain a strong understanding of Lilly core disease areas, and how they present windows for delivery, device, and connected solutions that could differentiate Lilly drug products in the long-run. Become a market sensing expert within Lilly and use that understanding to drive the external innovation strategy. Lead internal and external drug delivery/device portfolios focusing on technology exploration/investments for exploratory phase through initial concepts of mechanical and electromechanical drug delivery systems. Proficient in drug development process with familiarity on the chemistry and manufacturing side of drug delivery systems. Ability to advance drug device combination products.People: Empower and inspire by recognizing what is important to employees; reward and recognize appropriately. Set high expectations for value creation, monitor performance, and take appropriate action. Lead the development of relationships within the external broad technology community including in pharma and biotech companies, research institutes, academic, high-tech companies, start-ups, managed healthcare organizations, and other scientific organizations.Basic Qualifications: Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Engineering, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical Life Science or related field with 9+ years of drug delivery and device design and development or related. Experience on leading technical teams.
Additional Skills and Preferences: Demonstrated scientific knowledge of Pharmaceutical Drug Discovery, CMC, Clinical Development, and Intellectual Property Processes. Experience launching combination products or drug delivery-based assets, parenteral, oral and inhalation. Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex information and analyses to a variety of scientific and non-scientific audiences. Strong interpersonal & leadership skills and ability to represent Lilly in a highly professional manner. Strong problem solving, project management and leadership skills.
