POSITION SUMMARY

As our Geotechnical Engineer, you will inspect, evaluate, and give recommendations regarding ground control and stability of active underground workings at a hard rock mining operation.

Other responsibilities will include backfill analysis, corrosion mapping, pull testing, rehab mapping, and monthly reporting to the engineering and operations groups.

You'll start each day organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities to promote a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment.

You will be called upon to work cooperatively with others as part of a team, and encourage collaboration, trust, and openness among employees.

Here's what you can expect in this role:

  • You are responsible for designing, implementing, and ensuring quality assurance/quality control for all ground control practices, which encompass various rock bolting methods, shotcrete applications, and backfill procedures.
  • You will play a crucial role in identifying and mitigating potential geotechnical hazards associated with ongoing activities and future mining plans. This involves conducting inspections, monitoring, and utilizing modeling techniques to enhance safety and stability.
  • You will be involved in rehabilitation planning, tracking progress, and reporting on the rehabilitation efforts within the mining operations.
  • You perform comprehensive reviews of short-range mine planning, which includes development design, drift and fill, long-hole stope design, and backfill design. Your focus will be on addressing geotechnical hazards and concerns.
  • You will oversee projects related to ground support, rehabilitation, and backfill placement. This may involve both internal and contractor management to ensure the successful completion of these projects. Additionally, you will be responsible for creating Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) documents for capital projects and purchases.
  • You play a pivotal role in mine planning, both in the short and mid-range. This encompasses mine design, backfill design, short-range planning for development, production, and backfill to align with long-range objectives. You will regularly provide weekly and monthly reports on mining progress and conduct plan vs. actual reconciliations. Coordination with geology, survey, and mine operations teams to align priorities is also a part of your responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS -

Other Duties May be Assigned Technical functions for the role may include:

  • Designs, implements and provides QA/QC for all ground control practices including various rock bolting methods, shotcrete, and backfill.
  • Identifies and mitigates potential geotechnical hazards related to current activities and future mining plans through inspections, monitoring, and modeling.
  • Rehab planning, tracking, and reporting
  • Reviews short-range mine planning including development design, drift & fill and long-hole stope design, and backfill design for geotechnical hazards/concerns
  • Projects relating to ground support, rehab, backfill placement: o Internal and/or contractor management to ensure project completion o Creates AFE (authorization for expenditure) documents for capital projects and purchases
Mine planning (short and mid-range):

o Mine design

o Backfill design

o Short range planning of development, production, and backfill to meet long range goals

o Weekly and Monthly reporting of mining progress

o Plan vs. Actual reconciliation

o Coordinates priorities with geology, survey, and mine operations

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience

  • Degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or related degree with geotechnical certificate and experience
  • 5+ years of underground hardrock mining experience directly involved with geotechnical support and recommendations Technical Competencies Experience and advanced capabilities with any of the following skillsets:
  • Ground support techniques and geotechnical modeling
  • Project management
  • Mine costing and financial analysis techniques to explain variances, evaluate projects and prioritize allocation of resources
