As our Production Geologist, you will use established procedures to collect and interpret geological observations and samples for the purpose of guiding the mining effort to keep our production going and our profitability up.

You'll start every day organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities to ensure timely completion of projects, programs, and objectives.

The majority of your average workday occurs underground, collecting observations and samples, lining out headings, and involves clear and consistent communication with the operations and engineering groups.

To thrive in this role, you will provide geologic perspectives in level plan design meetings to optimize grade, extraction rate and safety.


POSITION SUMMARY

This position uses established procedures to collect and interpret geological observations and samples for the purpose of guiding the mining effort.

The role is based within an underground mine and is critical to the successful mining of this structurally complicated deposit.

Production geologists are mobile, driving their own vehicle and utilizing a lift vehicle for sampling the face.

The majority of an average workday occurs underground, collecting observations and samples, lining out headings, and involves clear and consistent communication with the operations and engineering groups.

SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Include, but are not limited to:

  • Display due diligence in safety & health, and environmental matters and lead by example to ensure the successful implementation of the Safety & Health Management System, and the Environmental Management System
  • Promote open communication and cooperation
  • Ensure that all employees, contractors, and visitors are informed of safety, health, and environmental issues on site and distribute relevant safety, health, and environmental information
  • Ensure Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) are completed for appropriate tasks and participate in the process
  • Undertake safety and health audits and inspections and interact with personnel concerning improving work practices and following up on action items
  • Support all personnel in achieving and maintaining desired safety, health, and environmental outcomes
  • Recognize superior safety, health, and environmental performance to help increase commitment and participation
  • Manage, notify, report, and investigate incidents and hazards in a timely manner as required
Manage compliance with safety and health requirements and ensure issues are being addressed prior to commencement of work (such as permits completed, isolations checked, and tagging completed)

  • Manage compliance with federal and state environmental regulations to ensure a field presence on a routine basis
  • Verify that personnel hold the appropriate qualifications and licenses
  • Monitor the safe use and control of all tools and equipment
  • Promote and assist in the implementation of site safety initiatives and safety-monitoring tools
  • Attend and monitor pre-start and toolbox meetings, ensuring they are conducted and minutes are prepared, issued, and action items developed as appropriate
  • Assist in preparing and contributing to monthly safety, health and environmental reporting


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Other Duties May be Assigned Within this role, technical functions are executed at an advanced level of capability with little to no involvement from a supervisor.


Technical functions for the role may include:

  • Map and sample ore faces for assaying
  • Identify potential geologic hazards and understand bolting requirements
  • Provide stope scale (or smaller) structural understanding to predict geologic hazards in front of current face
  • Map ribs of completed stopes to identify slabs, benches or extra panels
  • Make muck pile calls for placement according to acid generation characteristics
  • Sample ribs for acid-rock characterization
  • Enter face mapping and sampling into AutoCAD and acQuire
  • Prepare mine production reports and distribute on a daily basis
  • Participate in map meetings by providing relevant geologic information
  • Participate in level plan engineering meetings by providing relevant geologic information
  • Design slabs, benches and breastdowns with support of supervisor
  • Carry out modeling projects as requested under supervision
  • Prepare ARD (acid generating potential) reports from underground rib sampling
  • Provide geologic perspectives in level plan design meetings to optimize grade, extraction rate and safety

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience

  • BS in geological engineering or geology from a four-year college or university

Preferred:
One year or more experience in exploration or mining geology, preferably underground.

Other Qualifications

  • Proficient with Microsoft and AutoCAD software.

Preferred:
Knowledge of Datamine or equivalent modeling software helpful.

  • Familiar with various mining methods.
