As our Exploration Geologist, you will perform daily geologic functions and special projects in underground exploration activities to keep our production going and our profitability up.

You'll start every day organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities to ensure timely completion of projects, programs, and objectives. You will log core according to procedure as well as select samples for assaying and prepare samples for shipment.

To thrive in this role, you will assist with the design and preparation of drill stations, communicating with the mine operations group.

We're on a remote island, you must know how to work independently, identify, and resolve problems in a timely manner.


POSITION SUMMARY

As a member of Mine Technical Services, this position performs daily geologic functions and special projects in a producing underground hard rock mining operation.

SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Complying with all necessary requirements put in place to prevent incidents, injuries or losses
  • Ensuring the safety and health of themselves and others in the workplace by being responsible for their actions and taking due care while performing their work
  • Identifying, eliminating, and reporting hazards as soon as practicable
  • Reporting incidents and accidents as soon as practicable
  • Disclosing all information regarding incidents and cooperating in incident investigations
  • Assisting in the resolution of health and safety matters in a positive and timely manner
  • Using and maintaining PPE
  • Providing suggestions for improving work processes
  • Assisting Management by supporting change to achieve desired targets
  • Ensuring that plant and equipment operate within their safe working limits
  • Ensuring that correct equipment is used for the job
  • Participating in risk assessment methodology
  • Participating in safety initiatives
  • Receiving training and instruction as required
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS - Other Duties May be Assigned

Within this role, technical functions are executed at an advanced level of capability with little to no involvement from a supervisor.

Technical functions for the role may include:

o Log core according to procedures and enter logging into acQuire database

o Select core samples for assaying and prepare samples for shipment

o Keep drilling records and prepare reports on drilling, logging and assaying progress

o Assist with the design and preparation of drill stations. This involves repeated trips underground and communication with the mine operations group.

o Create cross-sections in geologic software and keep current quick logs plotted on the sections

o Manage contractor's work, including contract core loggers, geotechnicians and drillers

o Performs QA/QC on drilling data including assaying standards and blanks

o Assists with surveying drillhole collars and entering the data into acQuire

o Track costs and invoices for reporting and reconciling to budget

o Assis with the development of requests for capital expenditures according to company policy

o Assist with weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on drilling progress and results

o Assist with the design of drillholes for converting inferred resources, expanding inferred resources, testing the exploration model and to support the mining effort.

o Assist with design, schedule and budget of yearly drilling programs

o Assist with budget presentations for proposing yearly drilling programs at corporate meetings

o Assist with the creation of drilling, assaying, contract logger requests for proposals (RFP's) and contracts

o Assist with the reviews of mining plans and resource models to identify gaps or opportunities for drilling to add confidence and/or reserves

o Interprets drillhole and production face data to understand the geometry of the mineralized horizon and develop an appropriate exploration strategy

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience Requirements

  • B.S. in Geological Engineering or Geology with a Field Camp requirement.
  • 3 years of geology experience preferred
  • Underground mine experience preferred
Reasoning Abilities

Good decision-making skills, working with limited oversight based on conceptual end goals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to deal with ambiguity, incomplete information. Ability to prioritize based on conflicting criteria.

Other Qualifications

ATF possessor's clearance required.

Must complete MSHA 40-hour training or provide documentation of completed training.

Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Must be able to use a handheld GPS device for determining location and for orienteering.
