Our company has been family-owned and operated since 1928 located in Southern California. Our location in the wholesale produce market carries a full line of nuts, dates, candy and dried fruits. We are also an importer, processor, and packer of nuts, dried fruits, beans, rice, spices, candies, and grains , sourcing product both locally and internationally.

The Purchasing Director, based at our main facility in Pomona, California, will provide strong leadership to the Purchasing team and oversee the correct and timely purchase of raw goods and materials for manufacturing and resale. You will interact heavily with the company owner, sourcing products both internationally and domestically, strategizing product development, and communicating trends and crop availability cycles for various commodity markets. You will directly supervise a small team including ingredient buyers, purchasing agent, and purchasing assistant.

Our ideal candidate brings:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in majors including agri-business, agriculture/farming, horticulture, crop science, food safety, supply chain management or other related fields. Business administration, ingredient/commodity management or equivalent proven work experiences are encouraged to apply.
  • 5+ years purchasing experience in the food processing/manufacturing industry, ideally in the import of raw materials such as nuts, fruits and or spices.
  • Experience managing supplier relationships and with contract negotiations and contract management.
  • Experience with forecasting, identifying trends in demand, and inventory optimization with an understanding of farming, crops, growing seasons and/or agricultural cycles.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly preferred.

What You'll Do:
  • Supervise a team of buyers and oversee the purchases and delivery of food items (nuts, dried fruit, beans, rice, spices, candy, & grains) to optimize buying positions for raw materials to source and procure high quality raw materials and packaging products from reputable vendors.
  • Handle activities related to vendor negotiations and management, bid evaluation and drafting purchase orders of raw materials or other products.
  • Ensure maintenance of optimal levels of inventory to meet production demands. Reviews movement and inventory reports accordingly.
  • Ensure that accurate and timely forecasts are provided through contracting with growers or vendors in addition to reviewing and fulfilling material requests.
  • Update contract data and selling prices through ERP system, Epicor.
  • Research and evaluate commodity market data critical to raw material purchases and pricing for new product development.
  • Work closely with production, sales, R&D and other internal teams to implement sourcing strategies to identify and deliver cost savings, continuous improvement opportunities while ensuring appropriate timing and scheduling of food items for production.
  • Manage import ordering, paperwork, and related tasks such as initiation of import payments.
  • Monitor, evaluate and track materials and material costs against PPV standard costs, expediting orders, if necessary, as well as predicting future material availability while preparing market analysis reports.
  • Oversee the administration, supervision, and coordination of Purchasing Department employees work schedules for the department; monitors daily work hours.
    • Interview, hire and train all new team members.
    • Coach, mentor, and develop Purchasing Department staff to meet current and future business requirements.
  • Compliance to GMP, Food Safety, Food Defense and Food Quality regulations as required by the company, customers and/or government legislations, including timely communication to appropriate facility management of any non-conformity issues or violations found
