Spanish Teacher – Grades PK – 4th Part- Time Beginning Fall 2024

Baker Demonstration School, an independent progressive PK-8 school on Chicago's North Shore, is seeking an exemplary part time Spanish teacher for our PK to 4th grade program. We value candidates who are passionate about progressive education, have a love of students and teaching, and are innovative and knowledgeable about experiential learning. We place a high value on community and seek candidates who have excellent interpersonal skills who will work well with students, colleagues, and parents. This teaching position would include some combination of the following; motivating students to develop the necessary skills for language acquisition and provides rich, instructional experiences as a foundation for the introduction of the Spanish language and culture of Spanish speaking countries, evaluating each student's progress in aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing, and fostering cultural understanding and appreciation of Spanish speaking countries. Equally important, we seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to developing one's own cultural competency, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This position includes curriculum development, participation in all professional development meetings, collaboration with colleagues, and additional responsibilities throughout the year that require attendance at some evening/ weekend school events.

  Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience with progressive education philosophy and a constructivist pedagogical approach
  • Bachelor's degree in teaching Second Language; Master's degree preferred
  • Three years or more of effective Spanish classroom teaching
  • Fluent in Spanish; either as a native-speaker or through advanced coursework and experience
  • Expertise with supporting differentiated instruction and implementation of learning support plans
  • Experience with developing, implementing and teaching anti-bias and anti-racist curricula
  • Expertise in developing an engaging, collaborative classroom community that encourages problem solving, critical thinking skills, service learning and student leadership
  • A deep commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community for students and adults, based on cultural competence, social justice, and respect for diverse perspectives and backgrounds
  • Willingness to contribute positively to an educational environment that supports a lifelong love of learning, identity, self-esteem, and respect for the community and the world in which we live
