Job Description

The Communication Studies Department at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications to fill a full-time Assistant Professor position in Organizational Communication. The position is a tenure-track appointment to begin during the Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 semester. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust research program and regularly teach core organizational communication courses. Substantive research areas may include, but are not limited to, ethnicity/race studies, sexuality, ability, and/or workplace communication. We especially welcome applicants who approach their work with an engaged focus and who are well-versed in qualitative research methods.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a related field completed by July 1, 2024 (Fall 2024 start) or December 15, 2024 (Spring 2025 start).
  • A developing or established research agenda in organizational communication studies.
  • A record of, or potential for, publishing in top-tier journals or presses in the communication discipline and other relevant fields.
  • Demonstrated excellence in, or strong promise for, teaching an organizational communication theory course for our forthcoming doctoral program as well as undergraduate courses related to organizational and professional communication.
  • Evidence of attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and/or service.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of commitments to engaged research practices and qualitative research methods and analysis.
  • A record of research related to one or more of the following areas: interpersonal communication, family communication, technology, health communication, sexuality studies, ethnicity/race studies, ability, and/or workplace communication.
  • Evidence of or potential for external grant activity.
  • The ability to serve on thesis or dissertation committees beyond those with an organizational communication focus, especially for committees related to interpersonal, family, and/or intercultural communication.
Compensation Grade

Assistant Professor (9 month)

About Our Department

The UNR Communication Studies Department is an energetic, collegial, and growing community of scholars, teachers, and students with a deep commitment to excellence in research and teaching. We value engaged research and teaching practices, and we exhibit leadership at the college, university, and discipline levels. Communication Studies is home to a graduate program that currently confers the MA degree; and that will soon confer a PhD degree focusing on engaged communication research approaches in interpersonal and family communication, organizational communication, rhetoric and public culture, and critical-cultural studies. The department currently ranks as a top 10 program in several tiers of the most recent CIOS rankings including in critical theory (#9), LGBT studies (#7), sexuality studies (#7), and privacy studies (#6). The department also houses the Nevada Debate Union, an award-winning, national champion debate team.
