We are seeking a experienced technician to help implement advances in isotopes manufacturing science and automation technology associated with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Department of Energy (DOE) mission.

Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. This position resides in the Radioisotope Infrastructure Development group
in the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division of the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate at ORNL.


In this position, you will be a part of teams working toward achieving both the overall mission of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and those goals specific to the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division through advanced research in automation and controls.

You will be a part of the team implementing advances in flexible industrial automation, machine learning, sensor processing, machine vision, and/or human machine interaction.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with Automated Techologies for Glovebox Processing team to implement advances in automation and controls algorithms
  • Further mission of Strategic Laboratory Assesment by implementing and deploying robotics and automation for the Strategic Laboratory Assesment gloveboxes.
  • Be the primary SME for all things automation pertaining to glovebox deployment for Strategic Laboratory Assesment
  • Make mechanical modifications and customization of existing machinery
  • Manage multiple technical projects and meet milestones reliably
  • Help to support team goals and work with other team members
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or higher with at least five years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work both individually and as part of a diverse team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with manufacturing related automation
  • Fundamentals of electrical, nuclear and mechanical engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with manufacturing processes
  • Experience using ROS for robot control
  • Experince with programming and operating CNC machine tools
  • Experience with Strategic Laboratory Assesment robotics and automation
  • Experience in a glovebox environment
  • Experience with contamination control in a glovebox environment
  • Familiarity with various methods of radioactive decay and resulting radiation
  • Familiarity with effects of radiation on electronics
