Job Description:

The Underwriting Manager is responsible for leading a team of underwriters and overseeing the underwriting process. Your role involves ensuring that risks are assessed accurately, policies are priced appropriately, and decisions are made in accordance with company guidelines and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Team Leadership:

  • Manage and mentor a team of underwriters, providing guidance and support in their daily activities.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and implement training programs to enhance team skills.

Risk Assessment and Decision-Making:

  • Ability to create and compile as well as review and analyze underwriting data to assess risks.
  • Make informed decisions on whether to approve or deny applications based on risk assessment.
  • Utilize data analytics tools to monitor underwriting performance metrics and identify areas for improvement.

Relationship Management:

  • Prepare and present reports to senior management on underwriting activities, trends, and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with actuaries, product managers, and other stakeholders to develop and refine underwriting policies and guidelines.
  • Communicate with brokers, agents, and customers to gather additional information and explain underwriting decisions.
  • Handle escalated issues and resolve customer complaints related to underwriting decisions.

Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure underwriting practices comply with company policies, industry regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Conduct audits and quality assurance reviews to maintain high standards of underwriting accuracy and consistency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in underwriting within the insurance or financial services industry, with at least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role and 10 years in an underwriter capacity.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, practices, and regulations.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and make sound decisions.
  • Leadership abilities with experience in managing and developing a team.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with internal stakeholders, customers, and regulatory bodies.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to work in a team environment and be flexible to daily changing needs and job duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change as the company moves forward with in its strategic plan. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
