The role of a Commercial Surety Underwriter is a specialized and technical position within the underwriting field. In this capacity, you will oversee comprehensive account management, drive business development, and conduct thorough analysis of a complex portfolio of Commercial Surety Accounts. The ideal candidate will possess a proactive attitude, a robust financial background including credit assessment capabilities, exceptional communication and presentation skills, effective time management, and the ability to refine negotiation techniques.

This position offers a unique opportunity for an experienced Commercial Surety Underwriter to leverage their analytical abilities and entrepreneurial mindset while cultivating and maintaining relationships with brokers and clients in the Southern Region.

This role may be filled at either the AVP (6T level) or VP (7T level), with the hiring manager determining the appropriate level based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Actively pursue renewal and new account opportunities.
  • Assess accounts to align with the organization's appetite while balancing sound business opportunities. Negotiate terms and conditions to finalize agreements.
  • Cross-sell additional lines of business to enhance product density within accounts.
  • Maintain updated records in required systems regarding broker/client interactions and account status.
  • Accurately calculate target pricing using appropriate underwriting tools.
  • Identify and propose solutions for unique business unit and customer challenges.
  • Exhibit specialized knowledge and expertise in products and industry standards.
  • Administer and oversee underwriting rules, regulations, and rating manuals.
  • Operate at the highest authority limits on assignments that require advanced technical complexity and coordination.

Basic Qualifications for AVP (6T Level):

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 5+ years of experience in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.
  • OR High School Diploma or Equivalent with 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of time constraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  • Experience in a collaborative team environment.

Basic Qualifications for VP (7T Level):

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 7+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.
  • OR High School Diploma or Equivalent with 14+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 5+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 12+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Experience and knowledge in Surety and understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks.
  • Insight into broker relationship structures.
  • Ability to analyze complex credit assessments and trends.
  • Curiosity and investigative skills to comprehend business strategies and obligations.
  • Capacity to articulate strategies and financial concepts clearly.
  • Prior experience in managing and growing a profitable customer portfolio.
  • Negotiation experience with brokers and large organizations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
