Summary

The Light Duty Vehicle Divisions provides national leadership in the planning, formulation, and development of safety standards for improvements in vehicle crashworthiness in the areas of crash protection to vehicle occupants and vulnerable road users outside the vehicle, and crash survivability characteristics.



Duties

The Program Manager:

  • Plans, initiates, and coordinates comprehensive and effective short-and long-range motor vehicle safety programs, identifying proposed safety goals, and prescribing regulations and guidelines in the areas of special vehicles crash protection and crash survivability.
  • Develops and recommends safety performance standards, regulations and/or guidelines which reduce the occupant harm incurred in motor vehicle crashes.
  • Plans work to be accomplished by professionals in the Division. Sets priorities and prepares schedules for completion of work.
  • Assigns work to professionals based on priorities established by management, including the agency's Priority Plan. Also considers work assignment program area, the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments and special abilities and expertise of employees.
  • Develops and recommends requirements for research projects required to accomplish the mission of the Office to improve crash protection in the most effective and expeditious manner.
  • Directs the continuous upgrading, adjustment and reform of crash protection safety standards and regulations based on analyses of the state-of-the-art crash statistics, and effectiveness of current standards and regulations.
