Duties and Responsibilities


This internship is for a minimum 3 and a maximum of 6 months at the United Nations premise in New York, USA.

The internship is designed to be flexible, i.e., in-person, remote or hybrid. Full-time: 35 hours per week

Part-time:
20 hours per week. The duration and modality can be adjusted on request of the successful candidate. We seek motivated interns to support the work of the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC).

The UNOCC is a multi-party entity reporting to the Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Policy in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG), and on peacekeeping matters to the USG for Peace Operations in the Department of Peace Operations.

UNOCC's Research and Liaison Unit delivers cross-pillar analysis, research, and data-driven services that help integrate peace and security, humanitarian, sustainable development, human rights, and operational perspectives.

This internship is located in the Operations and Crisis Centre's Research and Liaison Unit.

Under the overall supervision of the team leader, the Intern may:

  • Support monitoring, research, and analysis (quantitative and qualitative) of political and security developments, human rights, economic and social developments, and humanitarian issues aligned with UN system wide activities and priorities.
-Assist in preparing visual slides and analytical briefs for cross-pillar and integrated-reporting outputs for senior UN leadership using standard methodology and templates. -Assist in identifying sources of data, maintaining established records and data sets and the further development of responsive sets of data/indicators for use on analysis products. -Help develop and maintain standard data and visual templates. -Assist in producing custom visual outputs such as charts, graphs, infographics using graphing tools or via standard design software (including through data integration techniques from Excel to PowerPoint). -Support delivery of presentations to Member States, including by compiling, processing, and visualizing information in a collaborative setting under time pressure. -Participate in meetings and draft minutes/meeting summaries as required.

Qualifications/special skills


Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.

However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.

D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Programme.

Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. For the post advertised, data analysis and proficiency of Excel and Microsoft Power BI are required.

Visualisation skills, knowledge of one or more presentation tools (e.g., Think-Cell, Tableau, Flourish, Infogram, SQL, R, Python) and automated integration of data from Excel to PowerPoint are a strong advantage.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat

Before resuming an internship, the applicant must submit proof of visa and/or work authorization.

Applicants who have previously served six months, in total, as an intern in one or more UN Common Systems cannot be engaged as an intern.

Applicants who are children, siblings, and sons or daughters-in-law (including stepchildren, half-siblings, or stepsiblings) of an active staff member in a UN Common System cannot be engaged as an intern.
