Duties and Responsibilities

The duration of the internship is for six (6) months.

This internship is UNPAID in person and full-time (35 hours per week), on the United Nations premise working arrangement from (New York, USA).

This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote.

The intern is expected to work five days per week, full time from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. within the Office of Counter-Terrorism, carrying out his/her tasks under the supervision of a staff member - the supervisor.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the department to which he/she is assigned and the period during which he/she will undertake the internship.

This internship is located in the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, (UNOCT) Policy, Knowledge Management and Coordination Branch (PKMCB), and is offered both in-person at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and remotely.

Successful applicants will be assigned to one of PKMCB's sections responsible for policy leadership, knowledge management, or coordination.

PKMCB is responsible for:

providing strategic counter-terrorism policy advice and analysis on country/regional engagement and key thematic issues; drafting and coordinating the preparation of reports of the Secretary-General on counter-terrorism, as mandated by the General Assembly and the Security Council; promoting coordination and coherence in the counter-terrorism and PVE work of the United Nations system; developing and strengthening relations with Member States, and partnerships with international, regional and sub-regional organizations, including civil society organizations; supporting relevant intergovernmental processes as mandated, including the biennial review of the United Nations Global Counter- Terrorism Strategy; and supporting the conceptualization, planning and organization of major UNOCT policy events.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the policy leadership functions of the Office of Counter-Terrorism to the United Nations system.

The Intern reports to a Political Affairs Officer, under overall guidance from the Senior Political Affairs Officer and Chief of the Section.


UNOCT was established to:
(a) provide leadership on the General Assembly counterterrorism mandates entrusted to the Secretary-General from across the United Nations system; (b) enhance coordination and coherence across United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact (former CTITF) entities to ensure the balanced implementation of the four pillars of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy; (c) strengthen the delivery of United Nations counter-terrorism capacity-building assistance to Member States; (d) improve visibility, advocacy and resource mobilization for United Nations counter-terrorism efforts; and (e) ensure that due priority is given to counterterrorism across the United Nations system and that the important work on preventing violent extremism is firmly rooted in the Strategy. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

The intern is expected to perform various activities and will work on policy matters related to preventing and countering terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism, including:

  • Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations, slide decks, etc.
  • Attend and summarize conferences and meetings.
  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
  • Assist in data collection and conduct research and provide analysis on relevant topics
  • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining databases.
  • Support the review of key reports and publications.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills


Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience.

However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
