Middle School: Math Educator

A bridge between the Lower and Upper Schools, the Middle School challenges students within a nurturing environment and provides opportunities to explore a variety of academic offerings, technology, physical education, music, art, community service and leadership roles. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who has a deep passion for learning and teaching to join our Middle School team as a Grade 6 mathematics educator.
The Middle School mathematics program aims to solidify computation skills, build self-confidence in mathematical abilities and teach organizational skills demonstrated in student work. The process of arriving at one's answer is more important than the answer itself. Integrated Math 6 will build on students' understanding of fractions and decimals, and continue to emphasize reasoning with rational numbers and the four basic operations. An emphasis is placed on problem solving, developing critical thinking, and logical reasoning skills. Exponents and roots will be explored in greater depth, and explicitly connected to geometric figures and real-world contexts. The course introduces negative numbers and absolute value, which are integrated into work with solving linear equations and inequalities. Students will also formalize their understanding of ratio and proportion and graphic representations of data. The position also teaches Integrated Math 6 Honors.
Essential duties include: (1) classroom instruction and ongoing student assessment; (2) communication with parents, including formal written reports on students several times per year; and (3) active, collaborative participation in the work of the department on curriculum development and pedagogy.
LJCDS faculty are also regularly expected to supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day and after school. In addition to teaching, faculty serve as advisors to students, offer daily office hours, and serve as a chaperone on overnight experiential education trips.
The candidate must have:
- A variety of classroom techniques and methods to promote high levels of achievement in relation to individual student abilities
- Enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to collaborate with colleagues in the department, across disciplines, and in all divisions
- Ability to create a supportive and caring classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another through student-centered instruction, collaboration, and authentic assessment
- The insight to gather and analyze data on student learning and teaching practices to improve the educational experience
- A willingness to contribute to school life as a positive community member in ways that go beyond the role in the classroom
- A bachelor's degree, preferably in a field of math or science
- Prior teaching experience - preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and teaching experience at the Middle School level Familiarity with computers and expertise in the use of technology to enhance instruction is expected. To perform this job successfully, an individual must have a working knowledge of Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and be able to learn to use other applications and hardware.
