The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking an Academic Advisor.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking Academic Advisors.Two full-time academic advisor positions are available to primarily serve select departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. CLAS academic advisors are integral to the departments they serve and for student success. They guide students through the university experience and value, embrace and promote a welcoming and supportive educational environment. They work with students in individual in-person and Zoom meetings focused on academic plans and goals as well as encouraging participation in opportunities and resources that can enhance collegiate and career success. CLAS advisors also collaborate with other student services offices to help students explore and prepare for possible career paths. They provide guidance and outreach to students who experience challenges and issues that impact academic success and participate in retention and graduation processes and initiates. In addition, CLAS advisors welcome and advise transfer students at orientation and assist them in transitioning to the UI. CLAS advisors collaborate and support each other through cross-training, programming, and staff development. They also serve on committees that work collectively to enhance the advising experience. Advisors participate in weekly and monthly developmental and community-oriented activities within the College, as well as participate in commencement and recruitment.

Responsibilities
  • Gain knowledge and expertise on departmental major requirements and policies.
  • Develop and practice skills in communicating with diverse student populations.
  • Understand FERPA policies and how to protect student privacy.
  • Advise undergraduate majors on departmental, collegiate and University policies and procedures. Monitor completion of General Education Program requirements and advise students on selection of courses that satisfy the requirements. Advise and monitor student progress regarding major requirements and on the development of appropriate academic plans.
  • Authorize registration, drop/adds and withdrawals.Prepare registration plans for athletes, SAP, and ROTC students.
  • Utilize and develop advising materials, tools, strategies, and programming to facilitate student growth, development, and success.
  • Create and send advising newsletter to students on regular basis.
The salary for this position is $48,500.

Education Required
  • A Master's degree in a liberal arts and sciences discipline or higher education student services administration, or a combination of education and experience.
Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of and ability to use office support tools available on the desktop (e.g., word processing, e-mail, presentation software and spreadsheets)
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the role of academic advising in higher education.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors.
  • Demonstrates a working ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, meetings, projects, groups, or activities, and make effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
Desired Qualifications
  • An undergraduate or master's degree in one of the following: Neuroscience, Biology, Communication Studies, Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Data Science.
  • Experience working as a professional academic advisor or in an undergraduate student services office at a public or private community college, 4 yr college/university for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Working knowledge of student development or counseling theories.
  • Experience working with students majoring in Neuroscience, Biology, Communication Studies, Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, or Data Science.
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa academic policies and procedures.
  • Experience managing an advising caseload of 100 high school, undergraduate or community college students for a minimum of 2 semesters.
