Join our team as a Work Equipment Mechanic As a valued member of our engineering department, you'll play a crucial role in maintaining and repairing a wide range of tools, equipment, and machines. By ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our equipment, you'll directly contribute to Union Pacific's ability to safely transport goods across North America. Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance and repair tasks on various tools, equipment, and machines utilized by our engineering department.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify potential issues and address them proactively.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions, troubleshoot problems, and implement effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop maintenance schedules and optimize equipment performance.
  • Follow safety protocols and adhere to established procedures to ensure a secure work environment.
  • Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, including documentation of repairs, inspections, and parts inventory.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to provide own transportation and maintain an acceptable driving record according to Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) standards.
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if operating a vehicle(s) with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 lbs or greater (CDL acquisition during the probationary period, if necessary).
  • Meet the physical qualifications and medical requirements set by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
  • Union Pacific Railroad's Health and Medical Services will make the final determination regarding FMCSA medical qualifications and may impose additional requirements to ensure the safe performance of job tasks, with or without accommodation.
Accountabilities
  • Collaborate with machinists to support the repair and maintenance of heavy work equipment utilized by the Maintenance-of-Way Department.
  • Manage inventory of safety supplies in the workshop, ensuring an adequate stock is maintained at all times.
  • Cultivate and sustain constructive relationships with colleagues, supervisors, contractors, and customers, and proficiently address any conflicts that may arise.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as delegated by superiors.
  • Guarantee adherence to railroad guidelines and regulations concerning safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
Qualifications - Required
  • Applicants must have reached the age of 21 or above.
  • Proficient computer skills and basic keyboarding proficiency.
  • Familiarity with safety rules, ability to practice safe work habits, and competence in identifying and avoiding potential risks and hazardous situations.
  • Strong foundational math skills, including the ability to perform basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and convert fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems. Additionally, applicants should be capable of extracting relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and written content.
  • Competence in utilizing both high precision instruments (e.g., calipers, electronic scales) and low precision tools (e.g., tape measures, hand levels) to obtain accurate measurements.
  • Effective and accurate comprehension, interpretation, referencing, evaluation, organization, and recording of both technical and non-technical information.
  • Proficiency in reading electrical schematics and prints.
  • Minimum of 4 years of documented experience as a diesel mechanic or automotive/heavy equipment mechanic OR possession of a Journeyman's Mechanic's card.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey information to coworkers and supervisors.

Qualifications - Preferred
  • Possess or able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or Class B during the probationary period.
  • Hold an Associate's degree or higher in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors, mechanics, diesel technology, or electrical components.
  • Successfully completed a formal training program focused on electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors, or electrical components.
  • Prior experience in an environment where the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection, is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions (including professional, personal, or volunteer experience).
  • Proficient in working with, on, and around moving heavy equipment, with relevant experience in a professional, personal, or volunteer capacity.
  • Willingness to work in confined and/or small spaces as needed for the role.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including overtime, holidays, and weekends.
Physical Requirements

  • Physically Demanding Tasks: Must have the capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks, including occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 65 lbs.

  • Walking: Safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces.

Work Conditions

  • You should be prepared and able to work in the vicinity of large equipment, such as railcars, locomotives, and cranes.

  • There may be occasional travel requirements, necessitating several days or weeks away from home.
