The Mental Health Coordinator is the main representative of IRC's mental health-focused programming, coordinating outreach and initiatives to address barriers to health and wellness for especially vulnerable clients. They develop partnerships and resources to improve IRC client access to mental health services and provide strengths-based, client-centered case management and mental health and psychosocial supports to vulnerable client populations. This role also works closely with the Intensive Case Management case worker and provides support to a small caseload of clients enrolled in this program. The Mental Health Coordinator also collaborates with other IRC departments to integrate mental health and psychosocial support services into existing programs through classroom instruction and alternative therapeutic interventions in group settings.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist the IRC to map local, state or regional resources and partnerships that can help IRC clients access mental health services.
  • Collaborate closely with the Preferred Communities (PC) team to identify healthcare needs and coordinate services for vulnerable clients.
  • Maintain a caseload of clients for short-term counselling while awaiting enrollment into external mental/behavior health services
  • Conduct RHS-15 screening at three months and one year post arrival; coordinate referrals to care as needed
  • Coordinate mental health intakes and follow up for all refugees referred to mental health treatment from the health screening
  • Facilitate mental health and psychosocial support group-based interventions such as Community Adjustment Support Groups, Emotional Well-being Workshops and Psychosocial Education Peer Support Groups for Parents/Caregivers in collaboration with other IRC programs and teams.
  • In collaboration with Healthcare Benefits Navigators, provide clients with extended orientation on a variety of topics regarding health such as women's health, specialized treatment for people with physical disabilities, and navigating mental healthcare systems at the local level.
  • In collaboration with Healthcare Benefits Navigators, facilitate health education workshops on health topics such as diabetes and hypertension; sharing information on preventive measures to address health concerns and how to access medical and support services related to the identified health issue presented
  • Work with survivors of violence to create, implement, monitor, and update individual safety plans
  • Respond to client mental health-related crises, with guidance from supervisor as needed.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation in client's case file to ensure services are properly documented throughout the client's service period; document all services provided in IRC's database, Efforts to Outcomes (ETO).
  • Attend relevant trainings and meetings at the local and national level.
  • Manage intern and volunteer support as needed
  • Other duties as assigned.

Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) Responsibilities:

  • Develop behavior plans for students exhibiting the highest level of need (Tier 3 behaviors)
  • Respond to student crises in conjunction with the student support team, utilizing trauma-informed approaches to de-escalation
  • Meet with students for individual guidance/counseling sessions
  • Maintain case notes for students served, containing detailed information on services provided
  • Participate in weekly Response to Intervention (RTI) meeting
  • Conduct outreach to parents of youth who are having difficulties in the classroom, coordinating meetings as necessary.
  • Refer students for ongoing mental health support in their community
  • Work with interpreters to provide linguistically appropriate services

Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree in social work
  • Completion of Supervisor in Field Instruction (SIFI) or ability to complete SIFI within 6 months of hire preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience providing social services or health programming for vulnerable populations. Experience working with refugees and immigrants to navigate American social/human service systems preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 years of experience providing mental health and psychosocial support services.
  • Ability to handle complex and sensitive cases and to work effectively with clients who have a wide range of psychosocial, protection, health, immigration, and criminal justice issues.
  • Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships.
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Familiarity with confidentiality guidelines and HIPAA
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Fluency in English required, both spoken and written; proficiency in language(s) spoken by client group preferred, including Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, and other target community languages.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.

Working Environment:

  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and 'field' time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
