The Metropolitan Council's Metro Transit Division is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and provides ridership through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as a resource for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities.

As a member of the Creative Services team, the Graphic Designer will focus their efforts on Transit Information materials including METRO line launch collateral, schedule displays, pocket schedules, route maps, bus stop signs, event wayfinding signage, and detour and construction signage.

This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement. The candidate's permanent residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin.


What you would do in this job
  • Design highly effective printed and static digital Transit Information and wayfinding materials that meet accessibility and design best practice standards and improve the customer experience
  • Generate and maintain numerous maps using established standards
  • Execute updates to all customer information materials related to quarterly service changes
  • Use XML scripts to generate accurate timetables and signage
  • Update customer wayfinding and other signage
  • Collaborate with internal departments (Transit Information, Service Development, Revenue Operations, and Bus/Rail Transportation, etc.) to gather requirements define project goals, and establish project timelines; generate layout proofs for review by various departments
  • Champion process improvement and communication across departments to meet project goals
  • Research and evaluate vendors appropriate for goods and services leading to the completion of assigned deliverables
  • Determine the most cost-effective production option for print projects by selecting appropriate vendors, media types, and production methods
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of experience (in graphic design) and completed education (degree field of study in graphic design or closely related field):

  • High school diploma/GED with five (5) years of experience.
  • Associate degree with three (3) years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher with one (1) year of experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Design fundamentals: composition, typography, color theory, and visual hierarchy
  • Print processes, terms, techniques, and paper specifications to ensure designs can be estimated accurately and are production-ready
  • Branding principles and ability to maintain brand consistency across various materials and platforms
  • Digital file production and accessible document creation methods
  • Basic signage, wayfinding, and mapping principles
  • Printed schedule and route map update processes
  • XML scripts that populate information materials via Adobe InDesign
  • Ability to efficiently update customer-friendly route maps using established map guidelines
  • An intermediate level of proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, specifically with InDesign, encompassing a grasp of file structure, including layers, paragraph styles, character styles, parent pages, and links.
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written form to effectively convey design concepts, rationale, and feedback to stakeholders
  • Adhere to established processes, standards, and templates when developing new and updating current materials and assets while balancing efficiency in handling a high volume of signs with the ability to maintain order and consistency
  • Establish clear visual hierarchies and organize information logically to prioritize important information and guide user attention
  • Develop strong creative concepts and translate them visually
  • Effectively work with internal partners, customers, and clients
  • Keep files organized and easily accessible to all internal partners
  • Meet deadlines and collaborate with a team
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues promptly
  • Give and receive constructive criticism to continually improve design work and foster a culture of collaboration and growth.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in a standard office setting. Position is required to work at outdoor events in various weather conditions. Travel between primary worksite and other sites.
