The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Division of Genome Sciences. The ideal candidate will have considerable knowledge and expertise to lead NHGRI's efforts to fund extramural research and training that aims to advance our understanding of structure and function of genomes and their implications for biology and disease etiology through grants and contracts. The Director must be a recognized expert who provides authoritative leadership for a well-respected extramural research portfolio, which includes a number of prominent national and international research programs.

The Director is responsible for: (1) Planning, directing, and facilitating multi-disciplinary research for the Division; (2) Assessing the need for research and research training in genome sciences and related areas; (3) Determining program priorities in genome sciences and related areas and recommending funding levels; (4) Preparing reports and analyses to assist Institute staff and advisory groups in carrying out their responsibilities; (5) Collaborating with the other NHGRI extramural research divisions to establish a balance of resources, personnel, and research and training budgets to achieve NHGRI goals; (6) Providing expert advice to the NHGRI Director on various aspects of genome sciences; and (7) Collaborating with the other NHGRI Divisions, other NIH Institutes/Centers, and other agencies and entities, nationally and internationally, and maintaining an awareness of research efforts in relevant program areas.

Required Qualification: The NHGRI seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. and/or M.D. in a field relevant to the position as well as vast expertise and credibility in leading the development of research programs in genomics. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to manage financial and human resources.

Salary and Benefits: This position will be filled under a Title 42(f) Excepted service appointment. Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid. A full package of federal Civil Service benefits is available, including: retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent).
