College/Department Information

The Immunology Center of Georgia (IMMCG) represents a new initiative by the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University to leverage the ability of the immune system to combat disease. The IMMCG will accomplish this by assembling teams of biomedical researchers with strong records of scientific innovation and technological development. The IMMCG will be co-directed by world-class immunologists Drs. Catherine `Lynn' Hedrick and Klaus Ley, both of whom have made major discoveries linking immune cells to specific mechanisms of disease. The goal of the IMMCG is to produce novel and effective treatments for conditions that heavily impact the communities of Georgia and the United States. The new center is aggressively recruiting faculty and staff to lead projects focused on cardiovascular disease, obesity and metabolic disorders, autoimmune and infectious disease, neurodegenerative disease and cancer.

Job Summary

We are actively seeking a motivated, self-driven, and collaborative team member to join our research group. Our research efforts encompass both basic and translational immunology, aimed at addressing fundamental questions regarding T cell development and function. Our studies involve the use of samples from healthy individuals as well as patients, and we utilize preclinical experimental animal models.

The immune system possesses the remarkable ability to distinguish between self and non-self, a phenomenon referred to as immune tolerance or "immune consciousness." However, a breakdown in this tolerance mechanism can lead to a spectrum of autoimmune diseases, where the immune system initiates attacks on various organs within the body. In our laboratory, we are deeply interested in understanding the extent of the immune system's consciousness and how a loss of this awareness can contribute to disease development through intercellular communication, particularly among different T cell types. We have recently published a paper demonstrating that a specific subtype of T cells, activated memory T cells, can engage in cross-talk and modulate the behavior of another subtype, naive T cells

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Execute various cell culture techniques, including the preparation of stock solutions and reagents. Perform cellular and molecular assays on purified cells.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, ensuring the timely replenishment of supplies when needed.
  • Effectively communicate scientific, technical, and administrative matters within the department, utilizing computer technology.
  • Maintain accurate records of conducted tests, results, collected data, and patient information.
  • Be responsible for inventory management at assigned laboratory benches, as well as the oversight of liquid nitrogen, refrigerators, and freezers by maintaining databases of reagents, antibodies, cell samples, etc.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and revisions to policies and procedures.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by P.I.
