ABOUT THE POSITION: Alpine seeks a Director of Manager Research to lead an innovative asset manager research and selection platform. Hallmarks of the program include proven capital market return assumptions, deep knowledge of managers and holdings, focus on a narrow group of superior managers, and contrarian investment decision-making.

ACTIONS TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS: The Director of Manager Research will assume the following responsibilities:

  • Analyze and rate current asset managers employed by clients.
  • Evaluate a large universe of asset managers and form a small working list, model portfolio, and performance record.
  • Develop a rigorous due diligence process including the employment of cutting-edge tools such as fundamental due diligence and performance analysis. Identify and contract with one or more consultant partners to execute key aspects of the due diligence process.
  • Evaluate alternative asset classes with a focus on real estate, private equity, and venture capital.
  • Establish capital market return assumptions and publish quarterly and annual investment and asset class commentaries.
  • Conduct periodic client calls to discuss asset classes, managers, and results. Attend meetings with larger prospects and clients.
  • Oversee manager monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to wealth advisers and assist them with understanding developments in alternative asset classes.
  • Work with the broader team to ensure a culture of teamwork, respect, ethics, and strong compliance with policies and procedures.

    QUALIFICATIONS TO MEET OUR FIRM'S OBJECTIVES: The successful candidate will be a high-integrity, independent-thinking, and deeply curious investment professional who has a passion for understanding the people, principles, and processes that lead to excellent investment performance.
    • At least seven years' experience in manager research which includes alternatives.
    • A clear understanding of the difference between fundamental and market performance and strong philosophical alignment with a fundamental approach to investing.
    • Excellent critical thinking skills and a healthy skepticism of industry norms, incentives, and biases.
    • Strong written skills and the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts to both investment novices and professionals.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to embrace and adapt quickly to change. Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, achieve goals, and work under pressure in a dynamic and complex environment.
    • Proven success working independently and in a team environment.
    • A positive outlook and sincere desire to persistently seek solutions to client and team challenges.
    • Proficiency with asset manager databases and Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and experience or ability to quickly learn Power BI, AI and other technology solutions.
