POSITION SUMMARY: The Surgical OR Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization. The tasks and responsibilities are to include assessment, plan, and evaluate the nursing care needs of the patient in the pre-operative area, during the surgical procedure and immediately after the end of the surgical procedure. The patients needs will be met by providing comfort and support for peri-operative patients and families. Evaluation of responses to treatments, interventions and anticipating the case specific needs based on knowledge of procedure and pathophysiology of the patient. The OR RN will, in addition to monitoring, recording and communicating patient condition utilizing computerized documentation system, execute physician orders, provide medication as ordered, serve as the primary coordinator of all disciples for patient care in the surgical operating room setting, and provide age and culturally appropriate care. Experienced OR RN may participate in the orientation and mentoring of new staff members. The OR RN will be available to be On CALL as her/his position requires.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential core function

satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill experience, and ability necessary to perform this job.

ESSENTIAL CORE FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of sterile technique, equipment and supplies needed for various surgical procedures.
  • Communicates, interacts and participates in teamwork on the unit.
  • Practices, endorses and provides customer service skills to patients, visitors, physicians and staff.
  • Serves as the patient and family advocate with respect to the patients' right to privacy by protecting confidential information.
  • Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care or the services delivered.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.
  • Follows established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient's care which results in harm.
  • Attends inservice presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements.
  • Uses Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety.
  • Regular, Punctual and Dependable Attendance.
  • Maintains and safely handles medications to include IV fluids, contrast media, and all Accudose medications.
  • Participates in emergency call schedule and reports for duty within 30 minutes of notification without question.
  • Documentation Computerized.

· Skilled in the following:

a. Assessment of Patients

b. BLS – Basic Life support

c. Maintaining Normothermia

d. Airway Maintenance, assisting with Intubation/Extubation

e. OR Equipment and Instrumentation, OR table, Lights, ESU, Suction, Powered Equipment and Minimally

Invasive Equipment.

f. Prevention of Infection, Wound management, Sterilization/Disinfection and Reprocessing of Instruments.

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

· Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma from an accredited institution required.

· Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

· Current FL RN license required or appropriate compact licensure. If compact license held in another state, active FL RN compact license required within 90 days of hire. Advanced Nurse Practitioner license acceptable

· American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and Certification required within 30 days*

*Instructor certifications interchangeable with required certifications

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:

· 2 years hospital experience preferred

· 2 years OR experience preferred

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

· Customer service abilities including effective listening skills

· Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.

· Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling , moving lifting of patients and /or equipment up to 50lbs.

· Posses the ability to work as a member of a team or independently as the situation requires and to prioritize responsibilities.

CUSTOMERS SERVED: All employees, staff of Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center in both clinical and non-clinical departments, including patients/families, physicians, volunteers, agency, contract, students and the community.
