The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), seeks applications from outstanding candidates to be deputy director of the center's Division of Clinical Innovation (DCI). DCI manages the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs) Program. The CTSA Program supports a national network of medical institutions that helps turn research discoveries into improved health care more quickly. The Program provides resources for local and national research communities to improve the quality and efficiency of all phases of translational research. It also supports investigators' career development.

Core Responsibilities

The DCI deputy director will:

  1. Oversee the activities of the Office for Planning, Evaluation, Analysis and Reporting (OPEAR). OPEAR coordinates submitted grant applications, budgets and communications for DCI.
  2. Support the DCI director in guiding the CTSA Program.
  3. Establish a vision of innovation and national leadership, with a broad charge to improve the implementation of all aspects of human subject studies.
  4. Create, test and implement improvements to the CTSA Program and related NCATS activities.
  5. Help the DCI director provide leadership and stewardship of NCATS' investments that bring innovation to clinical research.
  6. Advise NCATS senior leadership, including the director, on strategic program goals and activities. Recommend operational and administrative processes to improve overall efficiency.
  7. Bring broad scientific knowledge and vision to set priorities for DCI. Clearly convey that vision to NIH and NCATS leadership.

    Qualifications

    The ideal candidate should have a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent). Senior-level research experience or knowledge of research programs is also needed. This experience should include moving research from the laboratory to preclinical development and clinical trials and showing public health benefit.
