The Same Day Surgery/Observation Coder functions as the coder responsible for ICD-10-CM and CPT/EM facility and professional code assignment. This includes diagnosis, observation hour calculation, and posting of corresponding professional charges.

This is a virtual, remote, position that requires candidates to be highly organized, self-starters, well-versed in technical applications. Previous success in a remote environment is preferred. The work schedule is flexible. Typically, Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday with set hours as established between manager and coder may require weekend and/or holiday coverage to meet business needs as well as the possibility of mandatory overtime.

Employees are required to have flexibility to work any of our 8-hour shift schedules during our normal business hours of 08:00am - 05:00pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional weekends.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identify appropriate assignment of ICD-10-CM and CPT Codes for outpatient same day surgery and observation services provided in a hospital setting, while adhering to the official coding guidelines and established client coding guidelines of the assigned facility
  • Calculation of hour in observation
  • Posting of applicable facility and professional (E/M, procedure) charges
  • Abstract additional data elements during the chart review process when coding, as needed
  • Adhere to the ethical standards of coding as established by AAPC and/or AHIMA
  • Adhere to and maintain required levels of performance in both coding quality and productivity as established by Optum360
  • Provide documentation feedback to providers and query physicians when appropriate
  • Maintain up-to-date Coding knowledge by reviewing materials disseminated/recommended by the QM Manager, Coding Operations Managers, and Director of Coding/Quality Management, etc
  • Participate in coding department meetings, daily huddles, and educational events
  • Monitor partially coded worklist daily for accounts pending additional information

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma / GED (or higher)
  • Professional coder certification with credentialing from AHIMA and/or AAPC (CCA, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-H/COC, CIC, CCS-P, CPC, and CPC-A)
  • 3+ years of Acute Care Outpatient medical coding experience (hospital, facility, etc.)
  • 1+ year of experience working same day surgery, endoscopy, and observation coding
  • 1+ ICD-10-CM, CPT (including E/M), and Modifier experience
  • Ability to pass all pre-employment requirements including, but not limited to drug screening, background check, and coding
  • Ability to work the weekly schedule (Monday - Friday OR Tuesday - Saturday); with weekend coverage as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of same day surgery and observation coding
  • Experience with various encoder systems (eCAC,3M, EPIC)
  • Ability to use a PC in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Excel (create, edit, save, and send spreadsheets) and EMR systems

Telecommuting Requirements:

  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provides information privacy
  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure (if applicable)
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service
