Boston, Massachusetts, United States Merck Full time

Job Description

Our company is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. The difference between potential and achievement lies in the spark that fuels innovation and inventiveness; this is the space where our company has codified its legacy for over a century. Our company's success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare.

At our company, we are inspired by the belief that a research-driven enterprise dedicated to scientific excellence can create medicines that save and improve lives. Every employee is building on our proud legacy of scientific breakthrough. Our ability to impact the lives of patients worldwide depends on the integrity, creativity, humility and scientific acumen of our team. We are creating a diverse organization that is inspired by invention and founded on a culture of respect and collaboration. At our company's Research Labs Boston, you'll have the opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills through collaboration with talented and dedicated colleagues while advancing your career.

The Pharmacokinetics, Dynamics, Metabolism and Bioanalytics (PDMB) group is seeking a dynamic, strategic thinking and collaborative Senior Scientist to contribute to our company's drug discovery and early clinical development efforts. This position will be based at our research labs in Boston, MA. A demonstrated expertise in medicinal chemistry concepts, mammalian cell culture and advanced LC/MS techniques to characterize the drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic properties of novel molecules from discovery through to early development is required. Evaluation of structure-activity relationships, metabolic routes of elimination and estimation of drug interaction potential will be key focus areas of this role. The position will allow for regular interaction with multi-disciplinary discovery project teams and subject matter experts from other functions within our company's Research Labs. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to innovate, independently execute and be fully accountable for their scientific deliverables. The candidate will be expected to effectively present their work at departmental meetings as well as promote our company science through publications and presentations/lectures.

In this exciting position, your primary roles will include:

  • Design and implementation of primarily in vitro and some in vivo strategies to elucidate DMPK-related structure-activity relationships for small molecules and peptides
  • Utilize state-of-the-art bioanalytical approaches to quantitate drug levels in various in vitro and in vivo matrices in support of PK and PK/PD sample analysis
  • Close collaboration with PDMB subject-matter experts in Boston (MA), South San Francisco (CA) and West Point (PA) aimed at building highly efficient strategies to identify and optimize drug candidates

Education Minimum Requirement

  • Ph.D (with 0 – 3 years relevant experience) or Master's (minimum of 4 years relevant experience) or Bachelor's (minimum of 7 years relevant experience) degree in biochemistry, chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical engineering or related field

Required Experience and Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise generating, interpreting and applying cellular and subcellular techniques to characterize novel drug candidates, including small molecules, peptides, and protein therapeutics
  • Strong working knowledge of traditional bioanalytical techniques (primarily LC/MS) to quantitate drug levels in both in vitro and in vivo matrices
  • Ability to design, interpret and troubleshoot experiments aimed at addressing complex problems
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication, problem solving and collaborative qualities to deliver high quality results in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Hands-on experience with physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) or PK/PD modeling software packages such as SimCYP, GastroPlus or R.
  • General understanding of drug metabolizing enzymes (Phase I and Phase II) and ability to apply enzymology concepts and related structure-activity relationships to advance drug discovery efforts
  • Familiarity with electronic laboratory notebooks and related record-keeping approaches
  • Experience working within a research-driven pharmaceutical company
