Graduate Career and Professional Development Manager

The Office of the Provost is seeking candidates for a Graduate Career and Professional Development Manager position to join the Graduate Studies team led by the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies. This pivotal role will support the efforts within the University's 14 graduate and professional schools to design and implement a comprehensive plan and set of programs for graduate professional development, with an emphasis on doctoral students' career pathways.

To realize the Graduate Studies strategic plan to support the growth and success of all graduate and professional students throughout their academic experiences and career pathways, the Professional Development Manager will collaborate closely with our career development partners across the University. These efforts will be based on current research and national trends in graduate student career preparation and will build upon university and national resources including online platforms. The manager will develop and lead university-wide programs and workshops for graduate students.

The Office of the Provost - Graduate Studies Team is a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and deadlines that often shift and require both flexibility and attention to detail. The work is highly collaborative both within the Office of the Provost and across the University and requires the ability to exercise creative problem-solving.


Job Summary

Manages strategic planning, budgeting, development, marketing, execution, and assessment of career development programs, workshops, and special events. Provides tailored individual and group student coaching and improves student career prospects and opportunities by developing effective relationships across business constituents. Conducts outreach and research.


Essential Functions

Deliver, administer, and design programs and resources for graduate career and professional development university wide.

• Collaborate with school career service providers, the Career Center, administrators, university units, and external partners to design and coordinate these programs and resources.

• Teach graduate students and other members of the university community about career exploration and professional competencies through workshops, speaking engagements, and other events.

• Administer and expand University-sponsored online platforms that support students' development of professional competencies, career exploration, and job searches.

• Serve as a university-level expert on best practices, current trends, and current research in graduate student career exploration and professional development.

• Promote programs and resources to the campus community through webpage, email, social media, and other communication strategies.

• Leverage and evaluate university, local and national resources in programming offered to the University community including the Pittsburg Technology Center, the Council for Graduate Studies, AURORA Beyond the Professorate, National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, Imagine PhD, and Accelerate to Industry.

• Represent the University in programming sponsored by local and national organizations, including initiatives and grants.

• Utilize available survey results and collect additional student feedback to identify student needs, including annual placement data.

• Report data and make recommendations to improve University career programing, including best practices.

• As time permits, provide individual and small group career counseling.

• Key collaborations necessary for the success of the position include, but are not limited to the Career Center, University Center for Teaching and Learning, Health Sciences Office of Academic Career Development, Alumni Association, Pitt Commons, Data Analytics Team in the Office of the Provost, Center for the Integration of Research and Learning (CIRTL), and program/school career offices within all 14 graduate and professional schools.

Qualified candidates are required to possess the following skills & qualifications:

• Bachelor's required. Master's or doctorate preferred.

• Two years' experience in career and professional development programming and teaching/advising. Excellent oral and written communication skills appropriate for various audiences.

• Acute attention to detail.

• Ability to execute multiple projects with competing deadlines, to perform effectively with a fluctuating workload, to be flexible and to generate creative problem-solving approaches.

• Demonstrated commitment to diversity including incorporating different perspectives in university-wide programming.

• Ability to educate and mentor in classroom and one-on-one settings.

• Ability to efficiently learn and implement new technologies and processes, including Canvas Learning Management System.

• Experience using spreadsheets to collect and review assessment and placement data, make simple calculations, and identify trends. Collaborate with data analysts on more complicated questions and data sets.

• Comfortable collaborating with others on projects and tasks as both a leader and a participant.

• Willingness and eagerness to learn and grow individually and as part of a team.

• Strong knowledge of current and future trends in graduate and professional career pathways preferred.
