This position works as a highly motivated, brings enthusiasm, and is interested in gaining multi-disciplinary engineering experience. Performs regulatory compliance, engineering, and consultant/project management work for the I-95 Landfill Facility, the I-66 Transfer Station, and the Newington Collection Facility under general supervision of our Engineer V. Provides technical analysis and engineering support for operations staff, environmental and regulatory compliance, landfill gas management and utilization, air quality, stormwater & wastewater management, groundwater monitoring and remediation, and design and construction management activities at any of the locations operated by the Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program. You will get a wide array of virtually all areas of public works in one spot This position also has a great mix of both office engineering work along with plenty of hands-on field experience. Daily work assignments may include a mix of engineering calculations, field inspections, regulatory reporting, project management, contract administration with consultants/technical firms, and many other varied tasks. The variety of skills gained in this position is ideal for engineers that want to expand their knowledge base and makes for a great place to begin a career with Fairfax County.
This position requires regular operation of a motor vehicle to drive to/from construction sites, offsite meetings, training and/or conferences. As a designated Emergency Service Personnel the employee in this position must fulfill emergency services duties and comply with Solid Waste and DPWES safety programs and guidelines.
The Solid Waste Management Program provides solid waste collection services for approximately 45,000 homes, operates a transfer station and ash landfill, regulates solid waste services, provides education and outreach to the community, and leads sustainability initiatives to promote zero waste goals for Fairfax County. SWMP is a national and state recognized program having received accreditation from the American Public Works Association and awards from the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program. The foundation of this success is SWMP's diverse and growing work force of approximately 350 employees all working to the singular goal of keeping Fairfax County clean, healthy, and sustainable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:Valid driver's license.DEQ DPOR Waste Management Facility Operator's License Class II VA - (Required completion of training class within 12 months of hire date).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree with major course work in civil, mechanical, or environmental engineering or relevant engineering/sciences field related to public works.Experience in engineering design or operations related to solid waste, stormwater, wastewater, groundwater, air pollution, or site planning.Three or more years of experience in managing multiple projects concurrently related to horizontal or vertical design/constructionThree or more years of experience related to environmental permit related activities such as regulatory reporting, record keeping, inspections.Experience with reading engineering plans including site layout, utilities, and gradingKnowledge of Local and State design standards within the land development industry.Experience in the use of AutoCAD software.Ability to work proficiently with Microsoft Office and other general software applications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance and greater than 25 lbs. with or without assistance. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, bend, stretch climb, kneel, crouch, reach, and crawl in order to perform duties. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and temperatures. Manual strength and dexterity are required to lift and handle materials. Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor and/or industrial environment, including hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, and sleeved shirt. Visual acuity is required to read and operate electronic & field monitoring equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
