Overview

The Lawrenceville School announces an opening for a full time Technical Director in the Performing Arts department. We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic, collegial individuals who want to work with both motivated faculty and students in a collaborative, diverse, and inclusive boarding school environment. The Lawrenceville Performing Arts Department supports students in becoming confident young artists, collaborators, creators, and citizens, and our curriculum is designed to develop capacities to understand themselves and others through theater with a focus on process and hands-on learning.

Responsibilities
  • Teach two to three sections/one to three preps per trimester.
  • Supervise three terms of a co-curricular commitment as Technical Director, supervising performing arts productions, including theatrical design and general production management, in collaboration with the department.
  • Manage student programs in technical theatre and shop spaces, setting strong safety standards for work in the fabrication and installation/use of scenery, lighting, sound, and costumes for productions.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff colleagues on the management and execution of theatre program needs, providing a rich experience for student learning and growth.
  • Demonstrate theatrical construction, electrical, and theatrical rigging skills, stagecraft, and management of production schedules, with experience in theatrical design.
  • Support community activities in the Kirby Arts Center, including weekly school meetings, guest lecturers, special performances/addresses, form meetings, admissions events, alumni/development events, college counseling events, etc., with additional staff support.
  • Co-coordinate scheduling of performing arts spaces for rehearsals, performances, school assemblies, and all other needs from the school-wide community.
  • Maintain facility safety and resources, including scheduled maintenance of equipment and technology related to theatrical performances, and ensure the proper functioning of the 838-seat theater venue.
  • Work within the department and in the broader school to foster community and belonging through School initiatives.
  • Advise five to eight students, and do one evening a week of "House duty," providing supervision in a student residence from 7-11:30 pm.
  • Although not necessarily starting their first year, faculty who reside in School-provided housing are expected to spend eight years living in one of the residential houses at some point in their career.
  • Work professionally and cooperatively within the department, the School, and the broader Lawrenceville community, supporting programs that make use of the Kirby Arts Center.
Qualifications
  • B.A. in Theatre or related field with three years experience (or higher) in technical theatre direction, equivalent theater studies in directing, technical theater, or a related field, and/or theatrical production work, or MFA in Technical Theatre or Production (or related field).
  • Strong background in stage electrics, carpentry, and technical theatre required.
  • A passion for teaching theatre, stagecraft, theatrical design, and collaboration.
  • Previous work with theatrical technology in projection, sound, scenic, lighting, and costume design is a plus.
  • High school teaching experience is preferred.
  • Ability to teach across a range of literatures, periods, and genres pertaining to theatre.
  • Ability to teach both introductory and advanced theatre courses.
  • Demonstrated success facilitating collaborative, student-centered, discussion-based classes.
  • Demonstrated success in providing timely, effective student feedback.
  • Demonstrated success working as a part of a high-performing team.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (oral and written) abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as needed and appropriate.
  • Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with Google suite and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Proficient programming skills in lighting, sound, and projection software, commonly used for stage productions and presentations.
