The University of Miami (LEND) externship, with the Departments of Pediatrics and Otolaryngology, offers comprehensive experience in pediatric audiology, including diagnostic evaluation, fitting, and rehabilitation, with focus on Leadership Development in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) for 300 clock hours. Diagnostic procedures include pure-tone and speech audiometry, immittance, otoacoustic emissions, vestibular, and evoked potential procedures. The facility also fits traditional and implantable (cochlear and acoustic) hearing devices as well as hybrid, and bimodal cochlear implants. Externs will have the opportunity to participate in aural rehabilitation and auditory/verbal therapy for hearing aid and cochlear implant users. Externs will have exposure to multidisciplinary collaboration with members of the Children's Hearing Program and the Mailman Center for Pediatrics. Externs are trained in the fundamental skills necessary to be a successful clinical pediatric audiologist. Students who complete an externship at the University of Miami are expected to demonstrate competency in each area ensuring a seamless transition from student to clinician.

This position is only open to students eligible to enter the 4th year externship as approved by an accredited university. The externship is comprehensive in nature, and as such, combines rigorous clinical requirements with ample hands-on clinical training experience. Externs participate in all required elements of the program. Additionally, externs participate in several supplementary activities specific to enhancing their clinical education. The student should demonstrate the appropriate skills required to meet these expectations successfully.

LEND Externs are required to attend the 2025 Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Conference and the 2024 Association of University Centers on Disabilities as part of their program, funded by the LEND grant.
