Project Overview:

Bechtel collaborates as the licensing, engineering, procurement, and construction partner with TerraPower's Natrium team. Chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for its advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, Natrium contributes to a DOE effort to reinstate U.S. leadership in nuclear energy. TerraPower, a prominent technology company established by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, will deploy its 345 MWE sodium fast reactor (SFR) known as Natrium. The Natrium Demonstration plant showcases a modern, cost-efficient reactor design that is safer, simpler, and more affordable to construct and operate, capable of delivering competitive energy compared to fossil fuels. Notably, the plant incorporates innovative molten salt energy storage output, enabling the production of over 500 MWE of power. The Natrium Demonstration plant will acquire licensing from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Other members of Team Natrium include GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Energy Northwest, PacifiCorp, and Duke Energy, supported by various national laboratories and universities. This DOE program has the potential to become the largest funding initiative for advanced nuclear power in U.S. history, significantly influencing the future of nuclear energy for years to come. Position Summary:

The role involves assessing, selecting, and applying standard engineering methods, techniques, and procedures independently, making necessary adaptations and modifications. Completing assignments with clear objectives and limited variables within a specific engineering discipline in a global business unit. Understanding fundamental discipline work processes, and executing engineering tasks with minor complexity. Involvement in the review and verification of designs, drawings, and data from suppliers. This position reports to a Control Systems supervisor, lead, or designated authority.

This opportunity is based in Reston, VA.

The candidate must have a good understanding of relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), Engineering Department Procedure Instructions (EDPIs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of the Control Systems Engineer may include, but are not limited to:

  • Specifications of instrumentation and control valves.
  • Creation of instrument and control valve data sheets and material requisitions.
  • Design and implementation of tubing, instrument installations, etc.
  • Coordinating physical locations of instrumentation, control valves, control cabinets, etc.
  • Development of control narratives.
  • Design and evaluation of digital and analog control logic.
  • Assessment of Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) for various plant systems.
  • Data entry into instrumentation, valve, and I/O databases.
  • Allocation and arrangement of facility control system I/O.
  • Generating design and design change packages.
  • Creation of setpoint calculations.
  • Design and assessment of cabinet layouts.
  • Programming industrial control systems (DCS or PLC) software.
  • Reviewing control systems graphic displays.
  • Assessment of supplier-provided data and documentation.
  • Participation in supplier factory acceptance testing.
  • Collaboration with other engineering disciplines and functions.
  • Possible travel to plant and supplier facilities.

Qualifications and Skills:

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or a related engineering field from an accredited university, with at least three (3) years of control systems experience, or an MS degree in Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or a related engineering field. Alternatively, nine (9) years of engineering experience related to the position in lieu of a degree.
  • Candidates must have the legal right to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft application suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Codes and Standards relevant to control systems engineering and the nuclear industry.
  • Familiarity with SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
  • Experience or coursework utilizing industry-specific Control Systems calculation/design tools, such as instrument set-point calculation software, CAD 2D, and loop designing software.
  • EIT / FE Certification.
