An Overview
The work of this class involves overseeing the overall operation and facilitation of the Adult Day Services therapeutic recreation and volunteer programs. This work includes creating, monitoring, evaluating and implementing therapeutic recreation programs and services for older adults and adults with disabilities, including the development of program goals and objectives. The incumbent is responsible for the development, implementation and review of the center's Quality Assurance Plan. The Therapeutic Recreation manager develops implements and reviews the Center's policies in accordance with Federal and State licensing guidelines. The work of this class is responsible for the oversight and management of PeerPlace electronic data system. The incumbent is responsible for recruitment, supervision and training of volunteers who coordinate and lead or assist in providing a variety of therapeutic recreation programs. The incumbent initiates program activities and plans for specific groups based on the varied interests and needs of program participants. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Adult Day Services Program Manager. The incumbent also assists with other related duties as required.
What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate should have good knowledge of the aging process, social and recreational sciences, including the theory, principles, and practices of therapeutic recreation; good knowledge of one or more phases of community recreation work; good knowledge of State licensing procedures and requirements for adult day care facility; skill in interpersonal work relationships and in supervising other staff members; ability to work with individuals with both mental and physical disabilities; ability to effectively communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to develop and present creative therapeutic recreation programs for frail older adults with disabilities. Good knowledge of the social and recreational sciences, including the theory, principles and practices of therapeutic recreation; ability to break activities down into recreation skill levels that meet the needs of participants.
The Opportunity
Provide overall planning of activity program and lead daily therapeutic recreational activities;Provide direct care to persons served including toileting, and changing clothing;Provide supervision, evaluation, and leadership to activity staff, volunteers and students;Order and inspect activity supplies and monitor activities to ensure safety standards are met and State guidelines are followed;Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch and snacks;Contribute to the cleanliness of the center and prevent the spread of infection;Keep accurate documentation of participants' progress and case notes, assessments and maintain daily attendance records;Administer medication to participants, read doctor's orders, and complete medication administration records;Performs CPR and First Aid to participants and complete incident reports in the event of an accident;Performs related work as required.
About the Department
The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.
Minimum & Additional Requirements
Two-Year College Degree; good knowledge of the principles and practices of a field related to one or more phases of community recreational and cultural activity work; ability to plan and direct recreational program activities; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and with activity participants; ability to motivate interest and participation in community center activities with varied ages groups; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Four Year College Degree; considerable experience in therapeutic recreational or related field (i.e., special education, vocational rehabilitation, human development, etc.) including three years of experience at a supervisory level or related work at the level of Therapeutic Recreation Leader III, or completion of college level courses in recreation, physical education, fine arts, or in other fields related to area of assignment. CPR/First Aid certification, prior to working with consumers and possess a valid driver's license issued by state of residence with a safe driving record. Ability to acquire appropriate certifications for Defensive Driving, Medication Administration Certification, Snack/Food Handler Training within 90 days of employment appointment date.

Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 40 hours / week. Hours will be determined with supervisor.
