The academic tutor will assist students, on an individual or small group basis, with science-related coursework and study strategies for Anatomy and Physiology and other courses, such as Biology for Health Professions and Biology.
These are required courses for undergraduate students majoring in nursing, dental hygiene, allied health, veterinary technology as well as biology and other scientific fields.
This position requires proficiency in English and the ability to communicate effectively with students in a fast-paced environment.Key responsibilities will be conveying difficult content in understandable language and helping students develop effective study skills for science courses.
This academic tutor will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to develop new learning supports for students. The ability to work some irregular hours, including late afternoon and evening hours may be needed. The selected candidate will have a commitment to the learning of a diverse undergraduate population at an open-access college. Our Science Learning Lab serves over 100 students daily, helping them to succeed and achieve their goals.This will be a part-time position with an 80% full-time equivalency (FTE.)
The candidate will work out their final schedule with the Lab Director.
Sample working hours may include mornings after 8:00 a.m., afternoons, and early evenings (on two or three days a week) and possibly, weekend hours.
Average weekly hours will be greater during the Fall and Spring semesters (approx. 40 hours/week). Summer semester would require approximately 20 hours/week. This position is eligible for benefits.Essential Functions
- Provide one on one and small group tutoring.
- Help students develop study plans and strategies.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to provide supplemental instruction to students seeking assistance both in person and occasionally, online.
- Guide students to additional support services to help them meet challenges.
- Compile reports on student utilization of tutoring services.
- Perform related duties based on departmental need.
- Assist students with basic technology skills.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in a biological science (for example, Biology, Health Sciences, Neuroscience, or Physiology) or a related scientific or healthcare field.
Required ExperienceOne (1) academic year of experience serving as a tutor, teacher, or teaching assistant in a biology-related field.
Additional Qualifications Considered
- Candidates with a Masters, PhD, MD, or other healthcare related degree will also be considered.
- Previous teaching experience in Anatomy and Physiology at the college level.
- Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
