Serving as a member of the management team responsible to assist the Director, Pharmacy Services with the operational and administrative aspects of the department. The Administrator, Medication Safety and Performance Improvement assures strategic planning, management, and analysis of departmental budgets, sponsored research, program development, information systems, facilities management, and regulatory compliance for medication management including controlled substances to maximize the operational potential of the department. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree B.S. Pharm. required
  • Master's degree Health Care Administration, Business Administration or Doctoral degree post graduate PharmD required
Experience
  • Prior work experience not required
  • Safe systems (i.e. FMEA, PDSA, IIII), certification in health care quality required
Licenses and Certifications
  • PHARMD - Licensed Pharmacist in DC required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience with JCAHO accreditation standards and surveys, Federal and state laws and regulations, and performance improvement initiatives, measurement of effectiveness and benchmarking techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a challenging work environment.
  • Demonstrated critical system-thinking skills in strategic planning, marketing, and budgeting.
  • Computer skills: thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet Explorer.
  • Uses interpersonal and organizational skills to effectively manage working relationships.
  • Effective, professional, and positive communication skills (active listening & negotiating skills; clear, concise and correct written and verbal communication.) Very detail-oriented and a fast learner.
  • Understands and follows organizational and Departmental policies, procedures and performance improvement plans.
  • Understands and follows the organizational and Departmental mission and vision statements and philosophy.
Employs the balanced scorecard methodology and contributes to the planning and achievement of both short-term and long-term departmental goals.Assesses current trends of best practices and recommends the implementation to the Director of Pharmacy Services.Prepares, monitors, and operates within the departmental budget for operations, personnel, and capital equipment; prepares budget variance reports as required.Manages and leads the Department's informatics and technology/automation enhancement services and programs.Manages and implements pharmacy service's administrative responsibilities and participates in the interviewing, hiring, and training of pharmacy personnel with regard to the informatics and technology systems.Reviews the Institute of Safe Medication Practice's Medication Safety Alerts literature, National Quality Forum articles, and/or other evidence-based practices literature to proactively address potential issues in the organization.Assists in implementation of a new program/system that will enhance the safety of the organization's medication system.Serves as the content expert for Joint commission national patient safety goals and medication management standards.Reviews and revises the Policies and Procedures for the Department.Oversees all controlled substances related procedures for all patient care areas that have controlled substances.Adheres to the District of Columbia and Federal regulations, organizational and departmental policies and procedures with regards to procurement and distribution of controlled substances.Ensures that all controlled substances discrepancies are resolved per Hospital and Department policy.Maintains and revises policies and procedures for controlled substancesOversees all controlled substances related procedures for all patient care areas that have controlled substances.
