Primary Duties and
Responsibilities:

The

Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine (FCoM) is seeking a Chair to lead

the Department of Integrated Medical Education. The Chair will report to the Dean and

oversee the department's faculty and administrative support. The Chair provides visionary leadership to

the department and develops the strategic plan for high quality faculty

teaching, scholarship, and research. The Chair is responsible for promoting a

diverse and inclusive culture of academic excellence and a safe and

respectful work environment. The Chair will serve on the Executive Leadership

Team of the College, and will represent the department to external

institutions, organizations, and agencies.

Academic Programs:

  • Lead departmental efforts in the assessment, study, and research of medical education in the FCoM to become recognized as a national leader in inter-professional, data-driven, and community-engaged medical education.
  • Oversee faculty members' creation of the FCoM curriculum and their role to review and enhance the curriculum to meet program objectives and align with accreditation standards.
  • Promote innovative teaching methods, instructional technologies, and active learning techniques.

Research and Scholarship Initiatives:

  • Promote

    a vibrant research environment within the department.
  • Support faculty and students in conducting and collaborating on research and scholarly activities.
  • Facilitate

    the pursuit of research funding and publications.
  • Monitor and evaluate the departmental research programs.

Faculty Development:

  • Supervise procedures for recruiting, interviewing, and appointing new faculty members.
  • Evaluate faculty members and provide feedback and recommendations for their professional growth, including teaching effectiveness and scholarly activities.
  • Support faculty with appropriate and timely mentoring either personally, through senior departmental faculty, or other expert Belmont University faculty.
  • Oversee and make recommendations regarding promotion and/or tenure of faculty.
  • Promote a culture of excellence, collaboration, and diversity among faculty.

Administrative functions:

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision for the department that upholds the mission and vision of the Frist College of Medicine and Belmont University.
  • Provide effective leadership and management for the department's faculty, staff, and resources.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures in accordance with the institution's guidelines.
  • Manage the department's budget effectively, allocating resources to support teaching, research, and administrative needs.
  • Promote a diverse and inclusive culture of academic excellence and a safe and effective working and learning environment for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assign faculty to teaching responsibilities, directorships, and committees within the department, and recommend department faculty for committee assignments outside the department.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Faculty and Academic Affairs to oversee department review of faculty appointments and promotion.
  • Maintain all faculty files including all recommendations regarding faculty actions and teaching evaluations. Ensure that a faculty evaluation system is in place and the evaluation process is followed and monitored.
  • Supervise and annually evaluate Department staff.
  • Monitor the department faculty and staff to ensure compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Mediate conflict that involves department faculty.
  • Conduct regular meetings of the department faculty.

Other:

  • Collaborate with FCoM leadership to sustain a culture of innovation and commitment to learning excellence.
  • Serve as liaison between FCoM, the department and its faculty, identifying the resources, priorities, and infrastructure necessary to support faculty efforts and faculty development.
  • Work with the Office of Faculty and Academic Affairs to develop a strategy to enhance faculty engagement and well-being at the FCoM, including maintenance of an efficient and effective practice/research environment, cultivating personal resilience, and designing systems to support well-being.
