Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is a comprehensive health care system dedicated to patient care, research, and biomedical education. Each year, people throughout Tennessee, the Southeast, and across the United States choose VUMC for their health care because of the advanced therapies offered and commitment to treating patients with dignity and compassion. The clinical enterprise is comprised of the flagship Vanderbilt University Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital, Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital, Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital, Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital, and Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital (1,741 beds total).

VUMC also operates four ambulatory surgery centers, including a dedicated pediatric surgery center in Rutherford County, and has over 200 clinic locations throughout the Mid-South. Through Vanderbilt Health Services, VUMC provides additional care through 13 health care-related subsidiaries, 10 walk-in and afterhours clinics, six ambulatory imaging centers, 14 retail locations in Walgreens stores, and a division devoted to population health. Relatedly, VUMC collaborates with 70 hospitals and over 6,100 clinicians across Tennessee and five neighboring states to share best practices and deliver value-driven and cost-effective health care through the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network. With an independent and self-perpetuating 11-member board of directors, VUMC is the employment home for over 45,000 Tennesseans and is the largest employer in Middle Tennessee. Overall net revenues for the medical center are budgeted to exceed $7 billion in fiscal 2024.

The Department of Medicine at VUMC is one of the most comprehensive academic and clinical departments in the country. It is comprised of 1,043 faculty members (53 percent women, 47 percent men), 510 Advanced Practice Providers, and 526 residents, fellows, and graduate students. The Department's operational budget for 2023 was $391 million. The Department is ranked first in the nation for Medicine in FY23, as reported by the Blue Ridge Institute with $227 million in NIH grants.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center seeks a Chair to lead and ensure the excellence of the educational, scientific, and clinical programs within the Department of Medicine, the Medical Center, and the School of Medicine. The Chair has overall responsibility for operations and strategy of internal medicine's clinical, research, and educational programs, including internal medicine subspecialties across VUMC. The chair serves as the System Physician-in-Chief for the VUMC clinical enterprise, overseeing the growth and development of centers of excellence and outstanding clinical programs in the Department while also supporting and prioritizing the overall goals of the VUMC clinical enterprise. As leader of the Medical Center's largest research and GME department, the Chair plays a critical role in developing groundbreaking clinical, translational, and basic research programs and training programs in the Department while building trans-institutional academic programs with other departments and centers. The Chair will also contribute substantially to the formation of a truly integrated health care system across the main campus and VUMC's regional hospitals and clinics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHAIR OF MEDICINE

Assure delivery of excellent clinical education and advanced training to the medical students, residents, and fellows. Provide leadership and oversight to the residency and fellowship programs within the Department. Define and lead the Department's research strategy. Support principal investigators and other faculty within the Department in efforts to secure NIH and other grant funding. Ensure a deliberate investment into research activities and priorities within the Department. Supervise, prepare, implement, and monitor the Department budget, which encompasses all funding sources and ensures compliance with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines. Recruit, hire, and retain outstanding faculty within the subspecialties of medicine. Ensure an atmosphere of support and development while expanding VUMC's distinctive collaborative culture. Encourage ethical medical and financial practice across the Department. Prioritize compliance activities as necessary.
