Assess and evaluate for legal compliance, legal sufficiency, and/or advisability, local policies and practices, proposed actions and decisions, official conduct and authority, commercial transactions, draft documents and publications, investigations, responses to inquiries, public statements, plans, and initiatives.


  • Evaluate claims by and against the government, assess legal risk, and recommend disposition.
  • Research, analyze, and interpret federal, state, and local law, administrative decisions, case law, and legal opinions, as well as DoD instructions and regulations and Department of Air Force (DAF) instructions and guidance.
  • Prepare for and represent the AF/installation and its legal interests in correspondence, meetings, negotiations, and judicial and administrative hearings, involving federal, state, and local officials, parties with adverse interests, and commercial entities.
  • Perform legal assistance for active duty and retired military members and their dependents. Legal assistance for active duty and retired military members is provided as required and assigned by the Staff Judge Advocate and Division Chief, as well as other duties as assigned. Incumbent is expected to be conversant with and able to deal with a wide range of local laws and provide liaison with local officials.
  • Advocate AF positions and defend AF legal interests in meetings and negotiations with outside officials and entities, in order to reach agreements that permit the unconstrained execution of the AF mission and preserve command prerogatives.
  • Prepare cases for litigation, provides legal support during litigation, and, when designated, represent the federal government or the AF in judicial or administrative proceedings.
  • Administrative proceeding may include employee grievance proceedings, unemployment or worker's compensation proceedings, arbitration hearings, or hearings before state or local environmental regulatory bodies.
  • As required, assist DAF/JA Field Operating Agency (FOA) field support centers in preparation for labor, employment, environmental, contract, tort, or utility litigation, conducting investigations to obtain and preserve evidence, managing discovery at the installation, reviewing agency records for relevant material, assisting in the interview or deposition of witnesses, aiding in the preparation of motions and other procedural submissions, providing support for settlement discussions, and advising installation officials on actions and decisions related to the case.
  • Relating to environmental law matters, research and advise installation personnel on real property management, energy initiatives, environmental planning, environmental compliance, environmental protection, natural and cultural/historical resource protection, and occupational safety and health.
  • Prepare cases for litigation and represents the Government in federal district court and in other fora as needed.
  • Relating to administrative law matters, research and advise installation personnel on quality force management, standards of conduct and ethics, investigations, congressional inquiries, Freedom of lnformation Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act requests, reports of survey, line of duty determinations, barments, regulation review and interpretation, member financial responsibility, on-base private organizations and fundraising, command authorities and responsibilities, and myriad other legal issues affecting base operations.
  • Advise the Staff Judge Advocate, Space Launch Delta 30 Commander and senior Delta leadership on legal issues concerning the potential limitation and/or encroachment upon the use of and access to real property, airspace, and offshore water areas comprising Vandenberg SFB and the Western Test Range.
  • Relating to tort matters, research and advise installation personnel on tort claims against the government, claims in favor of the government, third party collections, claims inspections, disaster response, quality assurance/risk management reviews at medical activities, and medical-legal issues; also at overseas locations, medical cost recovery claims, foreign claims, and single service claims responsibilities.
