PRIMARY PURPOSE
Responsible for providing basic respiratory care to patients, as prescribed by physician, and within established standards and practices.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Must be a graduate of a Respiratory Care Program from an accredited American Medical Association (AMA) program.

Experience:

  • None.

Certification/Registration/Licensure:

  • Must be a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) through the National Board for Respiratory Care, Inc.
(NBRC).

  • Must have a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license from either the Texas Department of State Health Services OR Texas Medical Board.
  • Must have a current Healthcare Provider CPR course completion card prior to hire and/or placement in job from one of the following:
o American Heart Association
o American Red Cross Rescuer
o Military Training Network.

  • Prefer certification as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) through the National Board for Respiratory Care, Inc.
(NBRC).

Skills or Special Abilities:

  • Must be able to demonstrate basic assessment skills for prioritization of care, the application of patient driven protocols, and the delivery of simple therapy.
  • Must be proficient in the use of all equipment required for the delivery of Respiratory Care bedside therapeutic and diagnostic services.
  • Must be able to document activities accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Must be able to work under stressful situations.
  • Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors.
  • Must maintain required departmental competencies.
Responsibilities

  • Evaluates need for service delivery by incorporating established protocols, physical assessment, physician interaction, patient history, and clinical judgment into the decision process. Provides type and frequency of service that is consistent with patient status.
  • Maintains and applies knowledge of indications, actions, interactions, and adverse reactions of respiratory active drugs to include those which produce a secondary respiratory effect, in order to provide optimal patient care.
  • Performs and documents diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in keeping with departmental standards for quality and service indicators. Matches equipment needs with associated diagnostic/therapeutic intervention. Demonstrates patient centered/patient valued behaviors.
  • Troubleshoots respiratory equipment to ensure appropriate function. Removes and labels contaminated or malfunctioning equipment for processing as described in departmental objectives.
  • Promptly responds to requests for care. Provides timely reports, on transferred patients, to receiving therapist which includes priority status and pertinent case related data. Gives and receives shift reports to assigned therapist to ensure a clear picture of patient baseline status and care needs.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Respiratory Care area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
  • Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Respiratory Care by attending continuing education lectures/seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and maintaining professional licensure in Respiratory Therapy. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
Job Accountabilities

  • Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
