Senior Manager, Data Engineering

The Business Performance Engineering team supports a variety of analytics capabilities including a high volume of daily ETLs, various data products for analytics and business teams, and trusted data sources to serve a variety of data consumer groups at EG. We work extensively with data producing teams across the company as well as data analytics consumers to provide clear, accurate, and actionable 'last mile' data resources.

The Business Performance Engineering team is responsible for driving data engineering capabilities to support a variety of Expedia Group analytics communities including Product, Finance, Marketing, Legal, and individual Business Units. We provide data engineering technical expertise to support these groups with data to analyze business performance at every step of the traveler journey from visit to booking, the product experimentation impact on conversion, and financial key performance indicators.

What you will do:

• You will lead implementation teams and ensure the successful execution of new ideas or approaches
• You will coordinate with your team to define the measures of success for process improvements
• You will determine different phase milestones and priorities in collaboration with product management peers
• You will conduct day-to-day work and solve complex issues in your own specific technical engineering area
• You will share deep domain and industry knowledge between cross functional teams. Serve as a guide to others by sharing and helping junior associates in their duties
• You will extend outside of direct organization and collaborate with peers across a senior level organization
• You will partner with the business to have a clear understanding of how the technology stack is tied to business outcomes and our bottom line
• You will identify areas of improvements within the code and suggests solutions
• You will have very broad knowledge of the entire product and data pipeline, and can help with any component, or type of issues
• You will creatively test and maintain software applications and related program supporting large scale real-time & batch data pipelines procedures by using a variety of software development tools following design and data requirements of customer
• You will convey the right information to the correct parties to ensure that proposals for improvements are given the proper consideration and technical issues are resolved in a timely manner
• You will contribute to product development by identifying industry change, listening to customer needs, capturing feedback and communicating that feedback to the business
• You will examine inefficiencies in the existing stack operation and encourage engineers to improve them
• You will develop action plans for optimal resource utilization and manage resource usage among team
• You will guide employees and managers to develop team and individual goals, providing regular and specific feedback, and assess individual and team performance
• You will encourage and support education and professional development of employees and managers
• You will develop a diverse talent pipeline for a team, including onboarding, and evaluating talent gaps and opportunities
• You will craft the culture of your team by building team rituals, processes and practices that build strong team bonds and an open trusting environment where diverse viewpoints, opinions, approaches, candid conversations and critiques can happen
• You will coordinate and contribute to process and practice that drives cross-functional operational excellence

Who you are:

• Bachelor's, Master's, or Equivalent Experience; Technical degree or relevant experience is applicable
• Recruiting at least 5 data engineers to own team
• Performance managed at least 3 individual cases
• Executed capacity planning/allocation of teams of 10 or more
• Managing individuals in different locations
• Leading more than 3 multi-quarter data engineering projects
• You are strong in multiple technologies or languages, including ETL orchestration and computation (Airflow, EMR/Graviton, etc.) cloud technologies (Spark, Hadoop/Hive, AWS), analytical tools (Querybook, Trino/Starburst), Programming and Query languages (Scala, Python, Java, Linux, SQL, Presto, PySpark) and data lake/data warehousing principles and applications
• Able to justify technology choices to technical and non-technical observers
• Responsible for multiple technical domains
• Make well defined technology choices
• Mentor team members
• Defining teams' goals and how they fit a business need across multiple teams working together
• Delivering solutions to business problems spanning teams
• Delivering and influencing product roadmap, working in collaboration with product team
• Skilled in communication, documentation, project management
• Understanding of data access patterns, streaming technology, data validation, data modeling, data performance, and cost optimization

The total cash range for this position in Austin is $173,000.00 to $242, Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $277,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
