This is an OPS Part-time position working 20-24 hours a week.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position works within the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program to encourage and support breastfeeding with women enrolled in the WIC Program. It is primarily working from home but may include some office site activities. It is eligible for Tele-work status as a position. Duties are outlined below:

  • Provides basic breastfeeding support and encouragement to WIC mothers interested in breastfeeding.
  • Phone calls are made to clients from the Prenatal Certification Due Date report, prenatal referral cards and Breastfeeding Hot List as referred by nutrition staff.
  • Available for limited number of hours after 5:00pm to answer calls from mothers after hours which may be up to 9:00pm in the evening and on weekends. Not to work on Holidays. Contacts with mothers are documented in writing using the Loving Support client contact forms and entered into the FL-Wise data system weekly so other staff can view interactions ongoing.
  • Contacts made with clients on days in the WIC clinic are entered into FL-Wise the same day.
  • Confidentiality of client contacts is maintained always at work and at home or off-site in accordance with DOHP Information Security & Privacy Policy Confidential Information. Maintains client information in safe provided by WIC for home use.
  • Communicates with supervisor regularly; utilizes Peer Counselor WIC Hot List for WIC /nutrition related concerns or appointment issues of women to share with your supervisor; participates in PC, WIC and other meetings with arrangements made for participation off-site or in the office as applicable.
  • Scope of Practice in this position:
  • This position does not give medical advice of any kind to mothers. Advanced concerns or issues out of your scope of practice per policy are referred to the IBCLC for follow up including issues/difficulties with latching at breast, medical concerns such as jaundice, mastitis, etc. See Breastfeeding Scope of Practice Policy for details. Concerns may be discussed with your supervisor for best course of action or by contacting the IBCLC directly.
  • Scheduled for office hours/telework to complete the Peer Counselor Follow Up return clinic visit with baby one month after certification for breastfeeding partially to encourage continued breastfeeding. With telework, completes these weekly contacts by telephone and coordinates with nutrition staff if required for food package changes/counseling, and/or coordinates with support staff to issue benefits. Assures good communication with other staff daily.
  • Completes the weekly prenatal classes focused on breastfeeding as main topic for WIC moms. With telework, contacts the support staff assigned to the page after completion of contact to ask them to issue benefits to clients.
  • Participates in all training programs and meetings of peer counselors, including attending formal training sessions, observing lactation consultants helping mothers, and reading assigned books or materials about breastfeeding.
  • Assists with facilitation of the mother support groups and breastfeeding classes, as needed.
  • Completes all time, travel, EARS and DOH and WIC required training required for employment in a timely manner.
  • Position does not include cleaning or inventory of multi-user electric breast pumps.
  • Issuance of only the manual breast pumps to breastfeeding mothers may be done as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an

    or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster

    or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
  • Willing to work on nights and weekends.
  • Reliable transportation that you are willing to use for work related purposes.
  • Computer skills
  • Exclusively breastfed for at least 6 months

Preferred:

  • Breastfeeding experience
  • Reliable transportation
  • Experience working a job independently.
  • Experience documenting information and maintaining accurate records.
