Normal Work Schedule: Tuesday - Friday 6:00 am to 4:30 pm


Job Summary: The Life Safety Technician III serves as a work leader in the maintenance, repair, and installation of life safety equipment (smoke alarms, exit lights, emergency lighting, lightning protection systems, etc.).


Additional Department Summary: The Life Safety Technician III assists with the maintenance, repair, and installation of life safety equipment, including, but not limited to, smoke alarms, exit lights, emergency lighting, lightning protection, fire extinguishers, and special fire suppression systems under moderate supervision. Performs electrical repairs and/or installation of fire alarm equipment. Assists with coordination of electrical shutdowns that impact life safety equipment and the safety of the campus. Maintains information related to items replaced during the course of daily functions and the associated costs, as well as, required to maintain an inventory of necessary repair equipment needed. Provides assistance to other EHS functions on a regular basis. This position is required to maintain communication accessibility 24 hours a day & 7 days a week. May be required to respond to emergency situations after hours.


Required Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED and six (6) years of electrical installations, fire extinguisher recharge, fire suppression systems, and/or lightning protection systems experience. Active Journeyman Electrical License, Journeyman Lightning Protection License, and/or NICET Level III in Special Hazards Systems.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Skills and Knowledge: Must possess the ability to read and understand electrical plans and schematics, working knowledge of electrical tools and equipment, must possess the ability to operate a variety of computer software programs including word processing, and must be able to apply codes and regulations to a variety of situations which may be encountered on campus. Must be able to climb a ladder and routinely lift 50 pounds.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), prior campus experience, or fire alarm system experience.
